DESCENDANTS OF HERCULES GRAVES AND EMALINE ------ OF NC
GENERATION 1
Hercules Graves (1) 1833-1840 in NC[1]. He married Emaline ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1835 in NC (according to the 1870 census), or about 1846 in SC (according to the 1880 census). They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Hillsborough Twp., Orange Co., NC, with their race listed as black. They are believed to be former slaves. He was listed as laborer in 1870 and servant in 1880. In 1870, he was called Herk, and the surname of the family was listed as Green. He was in the 1910 census for Hillsboro, Orange Co., NC, widowed, with the family of his daughter Maggie living with him. All their children were born in NC.

Joseph Graves (7) was born 31
Oct. 1875 in Orange Co., NC, and died 28 Dec. 1956 in Durham, Durham Co., NC[2]. He married Parthenia
(ÒThenaÓ) Grady, daughter of Taylor Grady and Annie
Clark, about 1899. She was born in
Oct. 1882 in NC, and died 13 July 1935 in Durham, NC. They were in the 1900 census for Hillsborough Twp., Orange
Co., NC, living next to his sister Margaret. They were in the 1910 and 1930 censuses for Durham, Durham
Co., NC. In 1910, 4 of their 6
children were still living. In
1930, he and some of the members of his household worked in a tobacco
factory. All their children were
born in NC.

Margaret J. Graves (9) was born
in June 1880 in NC[4]. She married Clem Satterfield about 1900. He was born in May 1873 in NC. They were in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and
1930 censuses for Hillsborough Twp., Orange Co., NC. He was a gardener in 1900, a fireman in a cotton mill in
1910, and a janitor in a cotton mill in 1930. In 1930, Edward Satterfield, 7, a grandson, was living with
them. All their children were born
