DESCENDANTS OF JOHN T. GRAVES AND MARY F. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ OF DAVIESS CO. & OWEN CO., KY

GENERATION 1

John T. Graves (1) was born about 1826 in KY, and may have died before 1870.  He married Mary F. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1830 in KY.  A public member tree submitted to Ancestry.com gives her name as Mary Church, with no evidence.

This family may be closely related to genealogy 443 and descended from genealogy 270, since there are many similarities.

This may be the John T. Graves, 25, and Maria B. Graves, 18, in the 1850 census for Scott Co., KY.  He was listed as a physician, and they were living with the family of Samuel Poindexter, 48, farmer, and Henry Jenkins, 82.  Everyone in the family was born in KY except for Henry, who was born in MD.  They were in the 1860 census for Daviess Co., KY,  when he was a carpenter.  The discrepancies between the 1850 and 1860 censuses are puzzling; the occupations are greatly different, and their oldest child Emily was not in the 1850 census.  Mary was in the 1870 and 1880 census for Monterey Precinct, Owen Co., KY, with no husband, listed as widowed in 1880.  She was in the 1900 census for West Monterey Precinct, Owen Co., KY, living with her daughter Nettie.  All their children were born in KY.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF J. T. GRAVES (1) AND MARY F. ------

Sally (or Sallie) A. Graves (3) was born about 1850 in KY, and may have died 1870-1880 in KY.  She married John A. Greenwell about 1867.  He was born about 1849 in KY.  They were in the 1870 census for Monterey Precinct, Owen Co., KY, when he was a blacksmith.  They have not been found in any other census.  Both children were born in KY.

Children - Greenwell

+8. Robert Greenwell, b.c. 1867, m. Jennie Lawrence, d. 1943.

  9. Richard Greenwell, b.c. Feb. 1870.

William M. Graves (5) was born about 1858 in KY.  He married Dora ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1860 in KY.  They were in the 1880 census for Monterey Precinct, Owen Co., KY, when he was a laborer.  It is not certain that Thompson was their son (rather than a son of Dudley or Richard), but it seems likely.

Children - Graves

  10.  William Graves, b.c. Jan. 1880 (KY).

+11.  Thompson Graves, b. Aug. 1881, m. Mary Shelton, c. 1905.

GENERATION 3

CHILDREN OF SALLY A. GRAVES (3) AND JOHN A. GREENWELL

Robert Greenwell (8) was born about 1867 in Monterey, Owen Co., KY, and died in 1943 in Dayton, Campbell Co., KY.  It appears that one or both of his parents may have died before 1880, since he was living with his grandmother Mary Graves in Monterey in the 1880 census.  His surname was changed to Graves, probably when he was taken in (and possibly adopted) by Mary Graves.  He married Jennie Lawrence (or Sutherland), daughter of Nancy ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born in April 1869 in Henry Co., KY, and died in childbirth in 1903 in Louisville, KY.  She had been married before to William Henry Reeves and had three children by that marriage: May Reeves (b. May 1889), Omer Lee Reeves (b. April 1893), and Nannie Reeves (b. April 1894).  They were in the 1900 census for Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY.  All the children were born in KY.

Omer Reeves is probably the one in the 1910 census for Goshen, Oldham Co., KY, working  as a hired man.  He is in the 1920 census for Trout Precinct, Trimble Co., KY, married to Eva Mae ‑‑‑‑‑‑, and working as a farm laborer.  They were in the 1930 census for Market House, Woodford Co., KY, with 4 sons.  (R‑1)

Children - Graves

  12.  Lena Florence Graves, b. Jan. 1897.

  13.  Mary Lee Graves, b. 1903.

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM M. GRAVES (5) AND DORA ------

Thompson Graves (11) was born in Aug. 1881 in KY.  He married Mary Shelton about 1905.  She was born about 1888 in KY.  He may have died 1920-1930, since he has not been found in the 1930 census, and Mary married second Robert Mains in 1930.  They were in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN.  He was listed as Thomas Graves in 1920.  He was a conductor for a street railway in 1910, and he and Mary were running a boarding house in 1920.  All their children were born in IN.  Neither Mary nor the two daughters have not been found in the 1930 census.

Children - Graves

  14.  Richard Thomas Graves, b. 12 July 1906 (Indianapolis, IN), m. Mildred Marie Kane, c. 1928, d. 14 Dec. 1997 (Indianapolis, IN).  She was b. 2 Aug. 1911 in Ashtabula, OH, and d. 4 Jan. 1988 in Indianapolis, IN.  2 sons.  In the 1930 census for Indianapolis, IN, they were living with her mother at 2717 College.

  15.  Alma Graves, b.c. May 1910.

  16.  Eveylene Graves, b.c. 1914.
