DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GRAVES AND HARRIET ------ OF MS, LA & TX

GENERATION 1

William Graves (1) married Harriet ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1835 in MS. The 1880 census for Avoyelles Parish, LA, lists her, without husband and widowed, and the 4 children shown below. They have not been found in the 1860 or 1870 censuses. Gerald (R‑1) has heard that William Graves may have been the father's name, and that he may have gone to Rockdale, Milam Co., TX. The first 3 children were born in MS and the last in LA.

There was a William Graves in the 1900 census for Milam Co., TX, widowed, born Feb. 1846 in MS, with 5 children, all born in TX 1875-1891. (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1) AND HARRIET ------

John G. Graves (2) was born 9 Aug. 1859 in MS, and died 20 Oct. 1859 in Henderson Co., TX. He married Mary Elizabeth Warren on 10 April 1887 in Polk Co., TX. She was born 24 July 1852 in MS, and died 15 Dec. 1911 in Athens, Henderson Co., TX. All their children were born in TX. (R‑5)

Robert Graves (3) was born about 1867 in LA. He married Julia Lucana (or Lucinda) ("Cindy") Vallery, daughter of James Vallery (1844-1919) and Mary Ann Thompson, on 5 July 1883 in Grant Parish, LA. She was born 2 Oct. 1864 in Grant Parish, LA, and died 19 Feb. 1962. Neither of them could read or write. She was Catholic and a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church.

The family was in the 1900 census for Ward 10, Natchitoches Parish, LA, living as boarders in the household of Debach Gallion. Lucinda was listed as married for 14 years, with 6 of her 8 children still living, but no husband with them. She and her oldest 3 children were farm laborers. She married second Ambrose Gallion about 1907. She and her second husband were in the 1910 census for Ward 10, Natchitoches Parish, LA.

A search of the 1880 census showed only one possible candidate for this Robert Graves. All other people of that name in Louisiana in 1880 were too young to be possibilities. In Avoyelles Parish (close to Grant Parish), LA, page 499B, was a household headed by Hariette Graves, widow, age 45, born in MS. Her children were: John Graves, age 21, Robert Graves, 15, Jefferson Graves, 8, and William Graves, 5. The first 3 sons were born in MS and the last one in LA. Both the father and mother of all the children were listed as born in MS. (R‑3)

Jefferson Newton Graves (4), always called Jeff, was born 22 Feb. 1873[1], died 1 June 1932 in Monroe, Ouachita Parish, LA, and was buried in Spring Hill Cem., Rapides Parish, not far from the Grant Parish line. He married Sara Jane ("Sally") Deville about 1897. She was born 13 Jan. 1879 and died 13 June 1941. She was listed in the household of her parents in 1880 when she was age 2. Her father was Deterville Deville, born 9 Jan. 1834 and died in 1920, and her mother was Felicity Bellegard, born 12 Jan. 1850. Jeff was in the lumber business around Alexandria, Rapides Parish, LA.

They were in the 1900 census for Spring Hill, Rapides Parish, LA, with their only child still living, and his widowed mother, Beckie J. Graves, b. Jan. 1842 in MS, living with them. (It is not known why the name and age of Beckie does not agree with the information about Harriet.) They were in the 1910 census for Rogolette, Rapides Parish, LA, when 4 of their 7 children were still living, and her father and sister Ellen were living with them. (Apparently they had 3 children who died young, perhaps in infancy.) They were in the 1920 census for Rapides Parish, LA, when he was a marketman (perhaps running a general store), and her father was living with them. All their children were born in LA. (R‑1)
