Rev. 3 Dec. 2006, Gen. 630
DESCENDANTS OF ------
GRAVES AND NANCY ------ OF FRANKLIN CO., KY
GENERATION 1
‑‑‑‑‑‑
Graves (1) was probably born 1790-1800.
He married Nancy ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1799 in KY. He probably had a brother, Samuel Graves,
born about 1802 in KY. The 1850 census
for District 1, Franklin Co., KY, listed Nancy Graves, 50, as head of
household, Samuel Graves, 48, George, 15, and Lewis L., 11, all born in
KY. In the 1860 census for Dist. 1,
Franklin Co., KY, Nancy was living with her son Lunsford. She was living with her son George in the
1870 census for Union Co., KY. There
were probably more than the two children listed below, born in KY.
Children - Graves
+2. George Poindexter Graves, b. 17 Dec. 1836, m. Sarah Ellen Cox,
1859, d. 2 Dec. 1891.
+3. Lewis Lunsford Graves, b. March 1840, m(1) Sarah A. (or H.) ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
m(2) Sue Innis ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1886, d.
1900-1910.
GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF ------ GRAVES (1)
AND NANCY ------
George Poindexter Graves (1) was
born 17 Dec. 1836 in KY, and died 2 Dec. 1891 in Morgantown, Butler Co.,
KY. He married Sarah (“Sally”) Ellen
Cox in 1859. She was born 6 Oct. 1843[1]
in Franklin Co., KY, and died 8 April 1931 in Morgantown, Butler Co., KY.
They were in the 1860 census for
Morganfield, Union Co., KY, with no children, when he was a tanner. They were in the 1870 census for Hills
Precinct, Union Co., KY, with his mother living with them. He was a farmer. According to the 1880 census for Morganfield, Union Co., KY,
George's father and mother were both born in KY, Sarah's father was born in NC,
and her mother was born in KY. George
was listed as farmer, and his 2 oldest sons were listed as farm hands. It also looks possible that George and Sarah
may have died in Morganfield, Union Co. rather than Morgantown, Butler Co. She was in the 1900 census for Morganfield,
Union Co., KY, as a widow, with 10 of her 12 children still living, her 4
youngest children living with her, and 2 grandchildren living with her,
Gertrude McLin, 10, and Carter McLin, 5.
Since 3 of the 12 children listed below died by 1900, either she counted
wrong or there was an additional child (perhaps between Steve and Roy, about
1885) that isn’t listed. She was in the
1930 census for Morganfield, Union Co., KY, at 427 McElroy St., 87, widow. (R‑1)
Children - Graves
+4. John Alford Graves, b. 30 Jan. 1861, m. Cora Freeman Wilkerson, d.
25 Feb. 1936.
5. Martha Jane Graves, b. 29 Oct. 1862, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑
McLin, d. 1 Jan. 1898.
6. George Robert Graves, b. 5 Nov. 1864, d. 13
Nov. 1946.
+7. Sarah Elizabeth Graves, b. 7 Dec. 1866, m. Orlando Brown Gayle.
8. Nancy (“Nannie”) Gooch Graves, b. 15 Aug.
1868, d. 21 Aug. 1924.
9. Charles Campbell Graves, b. 17 March 1871, d.
17 July 1871.
10. Asa Graves, b. 2 Sept. 1872, d. 22 Aug. 1873.
11. Casey B. Graves, b. 5 Nov. 1874, m. Amelia ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
c. 1916, d. 16 Nov. 1963. They were in
the 1930 census for Morganfield, Union Co., KY, living on Main St., with no
children.
+12. Howard Smith Graves, b. 20 Dec. 1877, m. Fannie ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
c. 1901, d. 21 Nov. 1951.
13. Thurman Herbert Graves, b. 23 Feb. 1880, d. 6
June 1944.
14. Steven (“Steve”) Black Graves, b. 6 March 1882,
d. 28 Dec. 1933.
15. William Roy Graves, b. 13 Feb. 1888, d. 23
Dec. 1908.
Lewis Lunsford Graves (3) was born
in March 1840 in KY, and died between 1900 and 1910. He first married Sarah A. (or H.) ‑‑‑‑‑‑. They are in the 1860 census, Dist. 1,
Franklin Co., KY, Forks of Elkhorn P.O., with his mother living with them. There is a Sarah H. Graves, 36, as head of
household in the 1870 census for Forks of Elkhorn, Franklin Co., KY. It is possible that this is the same Sarah,
Lewis had died and his mother had therefore gone to live with his brother. However, if that is correct, then where were
the children in 1860 who are shown living with Sarah in 1870? There was an Orlando Graves, 10, and a John
Graves, 6, living with the family of Sam and Matilda Poindexter in Scott Co.,
KY in 1860, and that John Graves could be the same one as listed with Sarah as
age 16 in 1870.
He married second Sue (“Susie”)
Innis ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1886. She was born in Oct. 1857 in KY. They were in the 1900 census for Frankfort,
Ward 1, Franklin Co., KY, with 4 children, 4 of 4 were living, and he was a
carpenter. All his children were born
in KY. She was in the 1910 census for
Logansport, Ward 4, Cass Co., IN, 52, widow, seamstress, with 2 children, Alec
and Lewis.

19. Lewis Lunsford Graves, b. 22 Nov. 1895,
probably never married, d. 24 May 1950 (Brown Co., TX). The 1920 census for Manhattan, Dist. 7, New
York City, NY, listed him as 24, single, clerk at an oil company. His 1942 World War II draft registration
card gave his date of birth in Frankfort, KY, living in New York City.

29. Ann McClanahan; grandmother of Tracy
