Abel Grave (1) was born perhaps about 1760-1765 in Cumberland, England.  He married Jane Bateman.  All their children were born in Crosthwaite, Cumberland.  (R‑2)

James Grave (3) was baptized 4 Nov. 1787 in Crosthwaite, Cumberland, England.  He married Grace Dawson on 28 May 1803 in Crosthwaite, Cumberland.  All their children were born in Crosthwaite.  (R‑2)

GENERATION 3

 

CHILDREN OF JAMES GRAVE (3) AND GRACE DAWSON

Abel Graves (6) was born 20 Feb. 1807 (or in 1811) in Keswick, Crosthwaite, Cumberland (now Cumbria Co.), England, was baptized 22 Feb. 1807, and died in 1881 in Motueka, New Zealand (or 14 Dec. 1886 in Nelson, Nelson, New Zealand).  He married Sarah Stanley, daughter of Timothy Stanley and Elizabeth Summers.  She was born in 1812 (or 3 Nov. 1809) in Crosthwaite, Cumberland, was baptized 5 Nov. 1809 in Crosthwaite, and died 22 Aug. 1879 in Motueka, Nelson, NZ, and was buried 24 Aug. 1879 in Montueka.  They arrived on the vessel “Thomas Harrison” at Nelson, NZ on 25 Oct. 1842.

There is a record of baptism[1] for an Abel Graves, son of James Graves and Leylla ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 28 March 1819 at Distington, Cumberland, England.  It is possible that this is the same person, and he wasn’t baptized until he was about 7 or 8, and the family moved during that time from Keswick to Distington.

Abel and Sarah were in the 1841 census for Crosthwaite, Keswick, Cumberland, with no children, and the surname spelled Grave.  He was a shoe maker.

Joseph Somers/Summer Graves (10) was born 28 Oct. 1842 (or 1841) in Keswick (or Cockermouth), Cumberland (now Cumbria Co.), England, died 13 July 1904 in Riwaka, Nelson, NZ, and was buried 15 July 1904 in Palmerston, Otago, NZ.  He married Sarah Ann Grooby, daughter of Edward Grooby and Sarah Hudson, on 10 April 1865 in St. Thomas’s, Motueka, Nelson, NZ.  She was born 10 Oct. 1845 (or 26 Oct. 1846), and died 1 (or 3) July 1896, both in Nelson, NZ, and was buried 4 July 1896 in Wakapuaka Cem., Nelson, NZ.  (R‑1, R‑2)

Emma Graves (14) was born 23 July 1867 in Pangatatotara, Motueka, and died 10 Oct. 1941 in Nelson, both in Nelson, New Zealand.  She married Charles Barrow, son of George Barrow and Harriet Grooby, on 13 March 1889 in the Registry Office, Motueka, NZ.  He was born 12 Aug. 1864 in Horokiwi, Wellington, NZ, and died 30 Nov. 1942 in Nelson, Nelson, NZ.  (R‑2)

William Stanley Graves (15) was born 13 Dec. 1867 in Pangatotara, Motueka, and died 25 June 1951 in Ngatimoti, both in Nelson, NZ.  He married Helen (or Ellen) Maria (or Mary) Lunn on 21 April 1897 in Collingwood, Golden Bay, Nelson, NZ.  She was born 26 Sept. 1876 in Tamati Aorere, Collingwood, Nelson, NZ, and died 7 Oct. 1940 in Wellington, Wellington, NZ.  Their daughter Alma was born in Pakawau, Collingswood, Nelson, NZ, Ethel, Alice, John and Ellen were born in Bainham, Golden Bay, Nelson, NZ, and James was born in Motueka, Nelson, NZ.  (R‑1, R‑2)

Florence Amy Graves (18) was born 24 Dec. 1876 and died 19 June 1947, both in Nelson, Nelson, New Zealand, and was buried 21 June 1947 in Wakapuaka Cem., Nelson, NZ.  She married Clements George Newport, son of George Newpost and Elizabeth Anne Kinzett, on 20 June 1907 in Motueka, Nelson, NZ.  He was born 20 July 1883 in Nelson, died 16 May 1954 in Riwaka, and was buried 18 May 1954 in Wakapuaka Cem., all in Nelson, NZ.  (R‑2)

Alan Joseph Graves (20) was born 23 Oct. 1881 in Pangatotara, Motueka, and died 1 Nov. 1948 in Nelson, both in Nelson, New Zealand.  He married Ruth Jane Lunn on 17 Sept. 1904 in Pakawau, Collingswood, Nelson, NZ.  She was born 22 March 1882 in Tamati Aorere, Collingswood, and died 15 Aug. 1935 in Nelson, both in Nelson, NZ.  (R‑2)
