DESCENDANTS OF PARENTS OF JOHN GRAVES AND SAMUEL GRAVES OF CASWELL CO., NC

GENERATION 1

Unknown Graves (1) may have been born about 1790-1800, based on the ages of his two probable children.  The name of his wife is not known.  It is suspected that John and Samuel were his sons because they lived next to each other in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Leasburg Twp., Caswell Co., NC, all family members listed as black.  Descendants of John Graves were also living next to descendants of Samuel Graves in later censuses, indicating the possibility of a close relationship.  Also living next to them in 1880 was Emily Graves, 28, (probably wife of an absent husband or a widow of another son), her children, and her uncle Frank Lea, 56.  Maybe Emily was SolomonÕs wife, Emiline.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF ------ GRAVES (1)

John (ÒSolomon or SolÓ) Graves (2) was born 1820-1828 in NC, and died between 28 Dec. 1885 and 23 July 1886[1].  He married Fanny Lea.  She was born about 1830-1838 in NC, and died after 23 July 1886[2].  They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Leasburg Twp., Caswell Co., NC.  Ages on these and other censuses for this area (perhaps especially for former slaves) vary greatly from one census to the next, so it is sometimes difficult to be sure of correct dates.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in NC.

The 1870 census did not list Solomon and Silas, and those children havenÕt been found in Caswell Co., NC, or anywhere else in 1870.  There was a Silas Graves, born about 1856, son of Sidney and Mariah (or Maria) Graves, in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC, in 1870.  See Genealogy 464 for this family.  ÒSiÓ and Solomon were recorded with the family in 1880.

Calvin Graves (8) was born in March 1860 in NC, and died 1 June 1932 in Gilmer Twp., Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC[11].  There are a number of unanswered questions regarding Calvin Graves, including whether the records sited here are all for the same person.  He first married Mariah Hightower, daughter of Harrison Hightower, on 14 Aug. 1884[12] in Leasburg, Caswell Co., NC.  She was born about 1865 in NC.  He married second Mollie Hightower, daughter of Harrison Hightower, on 30 Dec. 1886 in Hightowers, Caswell Co., NC.  She was born about 1861 in NC.  He married third Hattie Poole, daughter of Lea Pool and Sallie Swift, on 11 Dec. 1889 in Yanceyville, NC[13].  She was born about 1870 in NC.  He married fourth Fannie King on 5 Feb. 1896 in Locust Hill, Caswell Co., NC[14].  She was born 24 May 1869 in NC, died 7 Dec. 1958, and was buried in Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church Cem., Locust Hill, Caswell Co., NC.  He and his family were enumerated twice in the 1900 census for Anderson Twp., Caswell Co., NC, once on June 5 and again on June 7.  This family was also recorded on the 1910 census in Roanoke, McDowell Co., WV; his first five children were born in NC and the last two in WV.  He was a farmer in 1900 and a coal miner in 1910.  Apparently Calvin was recorded twice on the 1920 census:  Once in Leasburg, Caswell Co., NC as a 65-year old widower; living with him were his niece and nephew, Mattie Graver [sic], age 18 and Louis Graver [sic], 16.  They were children of his brother Solomon:  Narcissa (or Mattie) (#33) and St. Louis (#34).  Calvin was misrecorded as ÒNeroeÓ, age 78, widowed father of Ellis Graves.  They were also recorded in Leasburg, NC.  Calvin was also recorded on the 1930 census in Olive Hill, Person Co., NC as a 68-year old widower.
