DESCENDANTS OF SUSAN C. GRAVES AND LEORCHUS VAN HOOK OF AL & TN

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Susan C. Graves (1) was born 22 Dec. 1809.  She married Leorchus Van Hook, son of Lloyd M. Van Hook, Jr. and Sally Austin, on 26 Dec. 1827.  He was born in 1806 in Person Co., NC[1].  In 1820, the Van Hook family was in Smith Co., TN, and in 1830 they were in Shelby Co., TN.

In Obituaries from Early Tennessee Newspapers, 1794-1851: “Van Hook, Mrs., Died in Memphis on Tuesday morning of Cholera, National Banner & Nashville Daily Advertiser, Wednesday, Nov. 14, 1832.”  It is possible this refers to Susan.

Susan apparently died by 1836, since Leorchus married second Mary Jane Hopkins, daughter of Richard Hopkins and Maria ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 12 July 1836 in Warren Co., MS.  Mary Jane was born 15 Aug. 1818 in IN.  The children of this second marriage were Ann Jannett, b. 24 Jan. 1839, Mizella (or Misella), b. 30 Sept. 1841, John I., b.c. 1843, and Sarah C., b.c. 1846, all born in MS.  The 1850 census for Lexington Twp., Scott Co., IN, showed Mary Jane and her 3 youngest children living with her parents.  Of the children of Susan C. Graves, James was born in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN, and Margaret was also born in Shelby Co., TN.  (R‑1)

James Hervey Van Hook (2) was born 19 Jan. 1828 in Memphis, TN, and died 12 Oct. 1896 in Marshall, TX.  He first married Harriet Jane Smith, daughter of Livinia Smith, on 24 March 1850 in New Orleans, LA.  She was born 21 Sept. 1829 in North Providence, RI, and died 20 Aug. 1878 in Marshall, TX.  All their children were born in Marshall, TX.  James married second Virginia Mason Sedberry on 3 June 1879 in Marshall, TX.  James was listed in the 1880 census for Marshall, Harrison Co., TX, 51, TN, married (but wife not listed in household), tinsmith, father b. NC, mother b. AL.  (R‑1)

Josephine Van Hook (4) was born 21 Sept. 1851 in Marshall, TX, and died 6 Feb. 1892.  She married Mike M. McPhail, son of D. C. McPhail, on 17 Feb. 1870 in Marshall, TX.  He was born 13 Feb. 1847 in Eufala, AL.  (R‑1)

Albert Van Hook (5) was born 22 July 1853 and died 20 July 1918, both in Marshall, TX.  He married Kate McGowan Allen, daughter of Nathaniel Sykes Allen and Martha Ann Carroll, on 12 Dec. 1878 in Shreveport, LA.  She was born 25 Jan. 1855 in Ellicott Mills, MD, and died 9 Dec. 1951 in Marshall, TX.  (R‑1)

Lillian M. Van Hook (6) was born 7 July 1855 and died 22 Aug. 1938, both in Marshall, TX.  She married Myron R. Geer on 5 March 1873 in Marshall, TX.  He was born 5 March 1873 and died 23 March 1902, both in Marshall, TX  (R‑1)

James Van Hook (7) was born 17 Feb. 1857 and died 15 Sept. 1918, both in Marshall, TX.  He married Mariella Taliaferro on 22 Oct. 1885 in MS.  She was born 27 Nov. 1867 and died in 1941.  (R‑1)

Katherine Allen Van Hook (14) was born 7 Feb. 1887 and died 6 Aug. 1974, both in Marshall, TX.  She married Berry Watkins Carroll, son of Daniel Watkins Carroll and Elizabeth Lavina Montgomery, on 3 Jan. 1911 in Marshall, TX.  He was born 6 Dec. 1882 in Negreet, LA, and died 1 Oct. 1949 in Longview, TX.  All their children were born in Marshall, TX.  (R‑1)

Ethel Carroll Van Hook (15) was born 11 April 1889 in Marshall, TX, and died 17 Feb. 1989.  She married Douglass Vaughan Blocker, son of Albert Butler Blocker and Elizabeth Jane Webster, on 30 Dec. 1914 in Marshall, TX.  He was born 2 Aug. 1886 in China Grove, TX, and died 2 May 1976 in TX.  (R‑1)
