DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS S. GRAVES, MARIAH ------, & OLIVE OWENS

OF OTSEGO CO., NY

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Thomas S. Graves (1) was born about 1797-1799, died 23 or 24 Jan. 1865 in Sidney, Delaware Co., NY, and was buried 25 Jan. 1865 in Evergreen Hill Cem., St. Matthews Parish, Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY, with both his wives and some of his children..  He first married Maria (or Mariah) S. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1835.  She died 1 June 1842.  He married second Olive Owens (or Owen) on 10 June 1843.  She was born 5 Oct. 1823, and died 24 (or 4) July 1894 in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY.  Thomas and his family lived in Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY, on the Susquehanna River, just across from Delaware Co. and near Chenango Co.  All his children were born in Unadilla.  He was a partner in a stagecoach line running from Ithaca to Catskill, NY.  He served in the War of 1812 under David Moyers in the NY Militia.

Could Olive have remarried after Thomas died to Salman Bowen?  She died in Oneonta, and the 1870 census for Oneonta showed an Olive Bowen (landlady for a hotel) married to Salman Bowen.  An Ezra Graves (possible relation?), 21, was working in the hotel.  (This connection seems unlikely, especially since Olive was listed as Olive Graves in the 1880 census.)

An infant son of Thomas died 8 Feb. 1847, and another child (age and sex unknown) died 8 Dec. 1861.  Thomas and Olive were in the 1850 census for Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY, with children Sarah and Maria.  The family was in the 1860 census for Unadilla, with Mariah, 11, Clark, 5, and Robert, 4, all born in NY, when Thomas was a mail carrier.

According to the book At Rest in Unadilla, also buried in Evergreen Cem., Unadilla, is Tola C. Graves, 1859-1940, and Sarah T. Graves, wife, 1858-1921.  Tola Clark Graves is listed as 3030 in Thomas Graves of Hartford, CT and Hatfield, MA book, by Kenneth V. Graves, pub. 1985, so it seems likely that Thomas may be related to him and also descended from Thomas Graves of Hartford.  Theodore Graves, born 25 Oct. 1800, grandfather of Tola Clark Graves, moved from North Adams, MA to Granville, MA, and then to Sidney, Delaware Co., NY in 1852.  Sidney is just across the Susquehanna River, only about 5 miles from Unadilla.

It is possible that Thomas S. Graves was a brother of Ruth Graves, who was born about 1809 in Springfield, Otsego Co., NY, and married Nelson Proper (see genealogy 762).  It is speculated in that genealogy that Ruth could be a daughter of Moses Graves, born about 1780, who was in the 1840 census for Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY.

The pension papers of Thomas Graves showed that he enlisted in the War of 1812 from Minden, Montgomery Co., NY.  The 1800 census listed a John Graves, born 1775-1784, as head of the only Graves family in Minden.  The 1810 census for Minden, Montgomery Co., NY, listed John Graves and Elisha Graves, both born 1766-1784.  Both censuses listed a male of the right age to have been Thomas.  John and Thomas both enlisted in the same unit the same day of 1812.  Also, the first son of Thomas was named John.  It seems quite possible that John Graves was the father of Thomas.  (R‑1)

Sarah Jane Graves (3) was born 7 Nov. 1840 in Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY.  She married William Edgar Hubbell about 1860.  He was born about 1836 in NY.  (R‑1)

Maria M. Graves (4) was born 5 Nov. 1849 in Unadilla, died 18 June 1901 at 37 Grand St., Oneonta, and was buried 20 June 1901 in Glenwood Cem., Oneonta, all in Otsego Co., NY.  She married Alpheus W. Wright, son of William Wright and Aurelia (or Arilla or Orilla) Wilson, on 30 Jan. 1865 in Unadilla.  He was born 8 July 1844 in Sidney, Delaware Co., NY, died 17 Dec. 1911 in Unadilla, and was buried in Glenwood Cem., Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY.  They were in the 1870 census for Guilford, Chenango Co., NY, when he was a farm laborer, and their 2 children were Alvin, 4, and Effin, 3/12.  They were in the 1880 census for Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY, with 2 children Alvin and Carrie (not Effin), and her mother (listed as Olive Graves) living with them.  (R‑1)

    14.   Carrie O. Wright, b. 24 March 1870 (NY), m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Bruns, d. 30 May 1890 (NY).  This is probably the same as the child in the 1870 census named Effin Wright, b.c. March 1870 (Charlestown, Montgomery Co., NY).

 

Clark Wilson Graves (6) was born 14 Oct. 1854 in Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY, died 6 March 1912 in Pentress or Behler, Monongalia Co., WV, and was buried in Olive Cem.  He married Catherine E. (ÒKateÓ) Carson on 11 April 1875 at the home of the bride in Petrolia, Butler Co., PA.  She was born in Nov. 1856 in Petrolia, Butler Co., PA.

He was in the 1870 census for Titusville, Crawford Co., PA, as a servant in the household of Norman R. Bates, an oil producer.  Clark and Kate were in the 1880 census for Bradford, McKean Co., PA, when he was a blacksmith.  He moved to West Virginia and was there in 1894.  They were in the 1900 census for Clay District, Monongalia Co., WV.  Both children were born in PA.  (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF MARIA M. GRAVES (4) AND ALPHEUS W. WRIGHT

Alvin Walling Wright (13) was born 13 May 1866 in Unadilla, died 27 May 1936 in Oneonta, and was buried  in Glenwood Cem., Oneonta, all in Otsego Co., NY.  He married Nellie Plue, daughter of Lucius J. Plough (or Plue) and Ruth Ann Sweet, on 25 Jan. 1894.  She was born 27 Nov. 1877 in Schoharie Co., NY, died 11 Dec. 1912 in Binghamton, Broome Co., NY, and was buried 13 Dec. 1912 in Glenwood Cem., Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY.  Both their children were born in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY.  (R‑1)

Frank Wilson Graves (16) was born 29 March 1877 in Petrolia, Butler Co., PA, and died 10 April 1951 in Fairmont, Marion Co., WV.  He married Ica Dona (or Isa Dora) Neely on 4 June 1902.  She was born 19 Oct. 1880 in Laurel Point, Monongalia Co., WV, and died 29 May 1955 at her daughter EstherÕs home in Mount Morris, Greene Co., PA.

The 1910 census for Clay Dist., Monongalia Co., WV, listed Frank W., 32, Icy D., 28, Estie W., 6, Archie R., 5, Donald W., 3.  They were living next to his parents, and both he and his father worked for an oil company.  They were in the 1920 census for Clay Dist., Mongalia Co., WV, when he was a foreman with Southern Pennsylvania Oil Co. and all 3 children were still living with them.  They were in the 1930 census for West Newton Borough, Westmoreland Co., PA, living between 2 Michael families, when he was foreman for a gas company, and none of their children were in their household.  All their children were born in WV.  (R‑1)

Clarence Summers Graves (17) was born 28 Dec. 1886 in Bradford, McKean Co., PA, and died 21 Aug. 1949 in Core, Clay District, WV.  He first married Ada L. Fetty on 14 March 1908.  She was born 15 July 1886 in Monongalia Co., WV, and died 14 Sept. 1917.  He married second Myrtle Stella Tennant on 4 Aug. 1919 in Cassville, Monongalia Co., WV.  She was born about 1896 in WV, and died in 1991.  They were in the 1930 and 1940 censuses for Clay, Monongalia Co., WV.  (R‑1)

Meriea Ruth Wright (19) was born 17 June 1903 in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY, died 11 Nov. 1968 in a hospital in Hartford, CT, and was buried in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.  She first married Willard A. Curry, son of John A. Curry and Ella Griffing, on 22 Sept. 1920.  He was born 14 Aug. 1898 in Otsego, NY, died 28 Feb. 1966 in Plant City, FL, and was buried in Hartwick Cem., Springfield, Otsego Co., NY.  She married second Harold James Clancy, son of Frank H. Clancy and Maud Miller, about 1928.  He was born 1 Jan. 1900 in Franklin Springs, Oneida Co., NY, died 1 May 1965 in Eden Park, Imokallee, Collier Co., FL, and was buried 7 May 1965 in Naples Memorial Gardens, Naples, Collier Co., FL.

The 1930 census for Otsego, Otsego Co., NY, listed Willard Curry, living with his parents, with daughter Geraldine Curry, 8.  (R‑1)

    27.   Shirley J. Clancy, m. Dow John Becker.  He was b. 16 May 1928 in Troy, NY, d. 5 Nov. 1993 at 191 Carver St., Chula Vista, San Diego Co., CA, and was bur. in Ft. Rosecrans, San Diego, San Diego Co., CA.  6 children.

    28.   Howard Francis Clancy, b. 16 March 1937 (Sauquoit, Oneida Co., NY), m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Dunn, d. 5 March 1994 (Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY).  5 children.

 

CHILDREN OF FRANK W. GRAVES (16) AND ICA D. NEELY

Esther (ÒEstieÓ) W. Graves (20) was born 15 Dec. 1903 in Core, Monongalia Co., WV, and died 9 Aug. 1985 in Mt. Morris, PA.  She married Raymond Leslie Fox on 16 April 1925 in Jefferson, Greene Co., PA.  He was born 3 Feb. 1897 in Perry Twp., Greene Co., PA, and died 26 Dec. 1986 in Morgantown, Monongalia Co., WV.  They were in the 1930 and 1940 censuses for Perry, Greene Co., PA.  He was an automobile mechanic in 1930 and an automobile dealer in 1940.  (R‑1)

Archie Raymer Graves (21) was born 28 March 1905 in Core, Monongalia Co., WV, and died 19 Jan. 1967 in Fairmont, Marion Co., WV.  He married Blanche Mae McDougal on 16 June 1924 in Morgantown, Monongalia Co., WV.  She was born 15 Nov. 1904 in Greene Co., WV, and died 31 March 1984 in Fairmont, Marion Co., WV.  They were in the 1930 census for West Newton Borough, Westmoreland Co., PA.  They were in the 1940 census for Blacksville, Monongalia Co., WV.  He was a clerk with a gas company in 1930 and an automobile salesman in 1940.  All their children were born in PA.  (R‑1)
