GENERATION 1
Charles Graves (1) was born about
1828 in MO, and died about 1877-78, probably in TX. He first married Sarah Ephland (or Epland or Eplan). She was born about 1832 in AR. Although they are said to have lived in AR,
they were in the 1860 census for Grimes Co., TX, with him listed as C. Graves,
his wife as Jane, and children George, Thomas and Nancy. Living next door in 1860 were Perry Graves
(difficult to be positive about name, and indexed as Perry Garo), 25, AR,
Martha, 28, LA, and Thomas, 1, TX.
(This person could not be found in any other census record.)
He married second Luidora[1]
‑‑‑‑‑‑, probably about 1876 in TX. She was born about 1851 in TN. She was listed as a widow in the 1880 census
for Brazos Co., TX, with her step-children Charles D., 19, Eddie M., 14, and
Ambro M., 10, and her son Stephen H., 2.
In Brazos Co., TX, records there
was a C. M. Graves (age 40) who married a Sarah M. Brockman (age 22) on Jan.
29, 1873. There was also a C. M. Graves
buried in Thompson Creek Cem., Brazos Co., TX.
Burial date was between 1875 and 1930, but no dates listed in cemetery
book. This looks very much like Charles
Graves and his second wife.
In the 1850 census for Red Land
Twp., Hempstead Co., AR, there was a Mary Groves, 54, KY, with children
Charles, 22, MO, Susan, 17, AR, and Pleasant, 14, AR; this could have been the
Charles of this genealogy. Living next
door was the family of Phillip T. Graves, 26, wife Louisa, 29, and 4
children. This is genealogy 363 for
Phillip Graves of KY, and seems to be a different family, since that Charles
Graves seems to have died after 1900, had different wives, and lived all his
life in Arkansas. However, in neither
this genealogy nor gen. 363 can unambiguous census records for Charles Graves

CHILDREN OF CHARLES GRAVES (1)
George Washington Graves (2) was
born 23 May 1852 (or 1853) in AR, died 17 Feb. 1918 in Bakersfield, CA, and was
buried in Bakersfield. He married Lucy
Tolin Reed[2]
on 22 Nov. 1882 at Williams Ranch, Brown Co. (now Mills Co.), TX[3]. Lucy was born 22 April 1869 in California,
died 21 Nov. 1960 in Gorman, TX in a hospital, and was buried in the Rising
Star Cem. She was a daughter of
Nathaniel Reed and Sylvania Toland (maiden name believed to have been
Cunningham). George and Lucy moved to
CA. Lucy last lived in Rising Star,
Eastland Co., TX.
George was in the 1880 census for
Brazos Co., TX, unmarried, 27, with his widowed sister Minnie and her 2
children. George and Lucy were in the
1900 census for Precinct 8, Comanche Co., TX, with their first 7 children. All 7 of their children were living at that
time, and he was a farmer. They have
not yet been found in later censuses to verify the names and birth dates of the
other children, and it is possible that two of the children listed below are

b. 20 March 1907, m. Ruth Jennie Land, d. 11 March 1964 (Fullerton, CA). She was b. 13 June 1906, d. Nov. 1979. They were both bur. Loma Vista Memorial,
Fullerton, CA. He last lived in
Fullerton, CA, and she last lived in Porterville, CA. Grandparents of Jeffrey Graves.
Nancy Ann (“Minnie”) Graves (4) was
born about 1857 in TX. She first
married William Kelly. She married
second Thomas Smith. She was widowed
and living with her brother George in the 1880 census for Brazos Co., TX, with
her two children, both born in TX.

Stephen (“Steve”) H. Graves (8) was
born Sept. 1877 in TX. He married
Evelyn Cheatham about 1899 in Orange, Orange Co., TX. She was born in Jan. 1876 in TX.
They were in the 1900 census for Beaumont, Jefferson Co., TX, living with
his step-mother and her new husband Dan McDaniel, a carpenter. Family lore has it that Steve had brothers
in Bryan, TX. They had only one child. The family recollection is that Steve was
around only a very short time, and even his son Meade didn’t know him. Evelyn was in the 1930 census for Orange,
Orange Co., TX, living with her son Meade.

Graves (9) was born 22 Feb. 1884 in TX, and died 6 Sept. 1962 in Stockton, San
Joaquin Co., CA. She first married
Alpine (called A.P.) Nunley, son of Francis Marion (called F.M.) Nunley and
Mary Jane Stone (called Jane), on 13 Aug. 1902 in Comanche Co., TX. Alpine was born 7 April 1882 in Comanche
Co., TX, and died 5 Aug. 1950 in Benjamin, Knox Co., TX. He married second Sarah Almira Hall on 18
Oct. 1916 in Knox Co., TX. Ara married
second Louis O. DeAlbar in CA. He was
born 11 May 1888 in CA, and died 29 June 1966 in Stockton, CA. There were no children by this second

about 1924. She was born about 1904 in
AL. They were in the 1930 census for
Orange, Orange Co., TX, with his mother living with them. In 1930, he was a salesman in a retail
store, and she was a teacher in a public school. (R‑4)

[1] Her name is from the 1880 census for Brazos Co., TX.
[2] Although it was stated that there is a belief that Lucy had been married at least once before and that Tolin and/or Reed was the name of her previous husband, R‑1 states that her marriage to George was her only marriage. Notice that Lucy was only 13 when she and George married, making it unrealistic to think she had a previous marriage.
