DESCENDANTS
OF ELISHA GRAVES AND JULIA A. MAYHEW OF NY & MI
GENERATION
1
Elisha Graves (1)
was born about 1820 in NY. He
married Julia A. Mayhew. She was
born about 1820 in VT. They were
in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses for Flushing Twp., Genesee Co.,
MI. He was a farmer. Their first 2 children were born in OH,
and all the others in MI. They
were in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses for Flushing, Genesee Co., MI. He was a farmer. Their first 2 children were born in OH,
and all the others in MI.
It has been suggested
that Elisha was a son of Elisha Graves (b. 1795, NY, d. 1865) and Almira
Cook. The Elisha (b. 1795) was
actually Elihu), and he was a son of Waters Graves in genealogy 166. It seems unlikely that Elisha was a son
of Elihu, since none of ElihuÕs other children are known to have moved to OH
and then to MI, and the 1880 census indicated that both of ElishaÕs parents
were born in NY, whereas ElihuÕs wife Almira was born in CT.
It is also possible
that Elisha was closely related to Matthias Graves (also recorded as Mathias
and Matthew). Matthias was in the
1830 census for Shelby, Macomb Co., Michigan Territory, and the 1840 and 1850
censuses for Flushing Twp., Genesee Co., MI. Elisha could even have been his son by an unknown first
marriage. However, his living in
Ohio in the early 1840Õs doesnÕt fit with that possibility.
Source R‑3
thinks that Elisha may be descended from Rear Adm. Thomas Graves (gen. 28), but
no specific connection to that genealogy has yet been found.
