DESCENDANTS OF CALVIN E. GRAVES AND CAROLINE MURPHY FOUST OF ORANGE CO., NC

GENERATION 1

Calvin E. Graves (1) was born 3 June 1823 in Orange Co., NC, and died between 1860 and 1870. He married Caroline Murphy Foust, daughter of George Foust and Maria Duffy Holt, on 20 March 1845 in Orange Co., NC. She was born 9 May 1826 in Orange Co., NC. All their children were born in NC.

It is believed by R‑2 that Calvin was descended from Johann Sebastian Graff (John Graves) of genealogy 105. However the evidence for his parents and his grandparents is very uncertain. (R‑2)

Henry Lewis Graves (2) was born in Oct. 1847 in NC. He married Mary E. (“Millie”) Williamson about 1870. She was born in Dec. 1850 in NC. They were in the 1880 census for Winston, Forsyth Co., NC, when he was a retail grocer. They were in the 1900 census for Smithfield, Johnston Co., NC, when he was a travelling salesman. All their children were born in NC. (R‑2)

9. Henry L. Graves, b. Dec. 1885, m. Geneva P. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. They were in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Smithfield, Johnston Co., NC, with no children. He was a traveling salesman selling medicines in 1920.

Annie Marie Graves (3) was born about 1849 in NC. She first married Thomas Tiddy. He died by 1880. She married second J. W. Reed. Annie was in the 1880 census for Winston, Forsyth Co., NC, as a widow, living with the family of her sister Mary. (R‑2)

George Calvin Graves (4) was born in July 1852 in NC. He married Maggie H. McNeil, daughter of Alexander H. McNeil (or McNeill) and Margaret J. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born in Aug. 1860 in NC. They were in the 1880 census for Carthage, Moore Co., NC, living with her parents, and George was a merchant. They were in the 1900 census for Carthage, Moore Co., NC, when George was a grocer. It also stated that all 6 of their 6 children were living, but that must have been an error, since 7 children were listed. They were in the 1910 census for Carthage, Moore Co., NC, when George was a dry goods merchant. All their children were born in NC. (R‑2)

Mary E. (“Mamie”) Graves (5) was born about 1854 or 1856 in NC. She married George Everett. He was born about 1852 in NC. They were in the 1880 census for Winston, Forsyth Co., NC, and her widowed sister Annie and Annie’s son Thomas were living with them. He was a lawyer. He could not be found in the 1900 or 1910 censuses. Both their children were born in NC. (R‑2)

20. Malcolm Everett, b. Jan. 1877. He was living in a boarding house in St. Louis, MO in 1900.

Lessie Velena Graves (12) was born in Sept. 1884 in NC. She first married W. Gilliam Brown about 1909. They were living with her parents in the 1910 census for Carthage, Moore Co., NC. She married second Z. Cabel Penn. (R‑2)

George Calvin Graves, Jr. (14) was born in Oct. 1888 in NC. He married Marjorie Johnson about 1913. She was born about 1897 in NY. They were in the 1930 census for Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC, when he was a commercial traveler for silk. (R‑2)
