DESCENDANTS
OF HENRY GRAVES AND ELIZABETH NEELY OF IL & KS
GENERATION
1
Henry Graves (1) may have been born
about 1825. He married Elizabeth
Neely. The death certificate of
their son, John R. Graves, states that the place of birth of Elizabeth was
possibly Virginia. The 1850 census
for Carroll Co., IL shows the following 2 children living with George and Ruth
Neely (born Ruth A. Hopkins), both age 59 (or 56) born in KY, but without their
parents. In the household there
were also 4 Neely children ages 5-16. George and Ruth may have been the parents
of Elizabeth Neely, but where were Henry and Elizabeth? It seems likely that Elizabeth died in
childbirth and Henry left the children with their grandparents. There may be a Romine connection,
because John R. Graves named one of his sons Marcus Romine Graves, and his own middle
name may have been Romine. All the
children of George Neely and Ruth A. Hopins are known except for one unknown
daughter, born about 1825 in Jefferson, Logan Co., OH; this may have been
Elizabeth.
There is a story that Henry Graves
was 3/4 Cherokee. (R‑1, R‑2)

HENRY GRAVES (1) AND ELIZABETH NEELY
John R. Graves (2)
was born in March 1848[1]
in Carroll Co., IL, and died 27 Sept. 1911[2]. He first married Lucretia
Belle Johnson, daughter of Isaiah Johnson and Eleanor C. Baughman, on 20 Nov.
1883 in Mason Co., IL. She was
born about 1866 in IL, and died 2 Nov. 1887 in Buckheart,
Fulton Co., IL. She was in the household of her father in the 1880 census for
Buckheart, Fulton Co., IL, listed as Bell Johnson. It appears that when his wife died, John found that he couldnŐt
raise his 3 young children, so they were split up and raised by three different
relatives (Johnson, Kirkpatrick and Maynard). R‑3 has a postcard from John R. Graves written Dec.
23, 1910 from Ft. Dodge, Kansas to his granddaughter Jessie Leota Williams, and
there is a tombstone in the Ft. Dodge cemetery with John R. GravesŐ name on it
but no dates.
He married second
Hattie Mae Andrews, daughter of Augustine Andrews and Harriet ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
about 1893. She was born in May
1867 in IL. Hattie was in the 1870
census for Canton City, Fulton Co., IL, living with her parents. According to the 1900 and 1910
censuses, their first son was born in OK, the next one in IL, and the third in
KS. Some of this information is
from the John R. Graves pension file and death certificate. They were in the 1900 census for Rose
Valley, Stafford Co., KS, and the 1910 census for Grandview, Ford Co., KS. He was a farm laborer in 1900 and a milkman
in 1910. (R‑1, R‑3)
