DESCENDANTS OF LEWIS P. GRAVES AND MARY PRUDENCE MASTERSON OF NC, AL
& LA
GENERATION 1
Lewis
P. (unsure about middle initial) Graves (1) was born in 1816 in NC[1],
and died in 1865 in Marion, Union Co., LA.
He married Mary Prudence (called Prudence or “Prudy”) Masterson,
daughter of Gutheridge Masterson and Mary Jane Marshall, on 21 Oct. 1841 in
Jackson Co., AR[2]. She was born about 1824 in AL[3],
and died in 1875 in Marion, Union Parish, LA.
Most of the names and approximate dates of birth of their children are
from the 1860 census for Marion, LA.
The
family was in the 1850 census for Union Parish, LA, page 380, dwelling 439,
with Lewis Graves, 34, overseer, NC, Prudence, 22, Malcum, 8, Thomas, 6, Mary,
4, and Ann, 2, all born in LA. The 1860
census for Union Parish, LA, Marion P.O., page 667, dwelling 1075, lists Louis
Graves, 44, farmer, NC, P, 32, AL, M, 17, J, 15, Mary, 13, Ann, 11, Wm, 9, H,
7, L, 6, and Frank, 4, all born in LA.
The 1870 census for Ward 2, Union Parish, LA, page 40, Marion P.O.,
dwelling 184, lists Mary, 45, AL, Jefferson, 25, AL, Doctor, 14, Robert, 6,
Ann, 18, Henrietta, 16, Lieu, 12, and Fanny, 8, all born in LA.
The
last 3 children aren’t in the 1870 census.
Based
on DNA analysis, this family is definitely descended from John Graves of
Northamptonshire, England & VA (genealogy 270) by way of John’s son Thomas2. Based partly on the name of Lewis’s son
Sidney Algernon Graves, and partly on the places lived, it is likely that the
descent is through John3 Graves.
The descendants of John3 Graves (b.c. 1715) are the only ones
whose DNA matches and who also used the name Sidney (especially in combination
with Algernon). The name Sidney was
used by the descendants of John’s children Ann, Solomon and Azariah.
One descendant
of Lewis P. Graves (R‑6) wrote that Lewis was born in Caswell Co., NC,
and may have been a son of John L. Graves.
The only John L. Graves who seems to qualify was born 1793, a son of
Solomon Graves, but he is not known to have married until 1824. Could he have had a prior marriage and
fathered Lewis P. Graves? (R‑1)
