DESCENDANTS OF ABRAHAM GREAVES AND ELIZA ------ OF BRADFORD, YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

Abraham Greaves (1) was born about 1816 in Yorkshire, and died 1841-1851. His name was difficult to read in the 1841 census, and it is possible it was Absalom. He married Eliza ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1821 in Skipton or Draughton, Yorkshire. They were in the 1841 census for Bradford, Yorkshire. She was in the 1851 census for Bradford, married to Joseph Wiseman. It appears that they had both been widowed, since there were 3 Wiseman children, ages aa-14, and 3 Greaves children, ages 7-11, in 1851. Eliza was apparently widowed again, since she was in the 1861 census for Manningham, Bradford, Yorkshire, 5 Green Lane, as a widow with children Margaret, Edward and Eliza.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF ABRAHAM GREAVES (1) AND ELIZA ------

Edward Greaves (4) was born about 1842 in Bowling, Bradford, Yorkshire, England, and probably died 1881-1891. He married Martha Myers. She was born about 1843 in North Bierley, Bradford, Yorkshire, and probably died 1881-1891. They were in the 1871 and 1881 censuses for Bowling, Bradford, Yorkshire, when he was a wool sorter. The 1891 census for Bradford listed children Emily (should have been Eliza), head of household, with Amy, Harry and Clara, but no parents. The 1910 census for Providence, RI, listed Edward, 67, widower, as head of household, with daughter Clara, 33, and Amy, Henry, and Hilda Menard. Edward was a wool sorter in a woolen mill in 1910. All their children were born in Bradford, Yorkshire. (R‑1)

GENERATION 3

CHILDREN OF EDWARD GREAVES (4) AND MARTHA MYERS

Eliza Greaves (7) was born about 1869 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. She was listed in the 1891 census for Bradford, Yorkshire as Emily, but as Eliza in all other censuses. She married John J. Lawless about 1895. He was born about 1870 in England. They were in the 1910 census for Johnston, Providence Co., RI, when he was a wool sorter in a worsted mill. They were in the 1920 census for Fernwood, Benewah Co., ID, when he was a placer miner, and their son John was living in the household of his uncle and aunt, Henry and Amy Menard.

Amy Greaves (9) was born in 1873 in Bradford, Yorkshire. She married Henry Menard about 1896. He was born about 1894 in CT. The 1910 census showed them in the household of her father. They were in the 1920 census for Enfield Twp., Hartford Co., CT, when he was a fixer in a carpet works. His sister-in-law, Clara Greaves, and his nephew, John Lawless, were living with them in 1920.

15. Hilda Menard, b.c. 1907 (RI).

Harry Greaves (10) was born 12 Oct. 1874 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, and died 12 Sept. 1929 in Enfield, Hartford Co., CT. It appears from the 1920 census that he arrived in MA in 1893 and became a citizen in 1900. He married Jane Agnes Whalen, daughter of James Whalen and Mary Crane, in Providence, RI. She was born about 1883 in RI. They were in the 1920 census for Enfield, Hartford Co., CT, when he was a foreman in a carpet works. She was head of household in the 1930 census for Thompsonville, Enfield Twp., Hartford Co., CT, when she was a dental nurse. Their first child was born in RI, and all the others in CT. (R‑1)
