GENERATION 1

James Greaves (1) was born about 1760. He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1778. She was born about 1758. Their first three children were baptized in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England, and the others in St. Mary's, Nottingham. (R‑1)

Robert Greaves (2) was baptized 9 Sept. 1782 in Nottingham St. Mary's, and was buried 16 June 1855 in Skegby. He married Mary Renshaw of Skegby, Sutton-in-Ashfield. Nottingham, on 21 March 1808 in Skegby. The witnesses were John Hardstaff and Ruth Cooper. Mary was born 20 Aug. 1789 in Skegby, and died 29 Sept. 1859 in Skegby. All their children were born and/or baptized in Skegby. (R‑1, R‑2)

Samuel Greaves (12) was baptized 23 June 1811 and died 17 March 1887, both in Skegby, Nottinghamshire. He married Ann Moakes on 17 Oct. 1834 in Teversal, Notts. She was born about 1814 in Fackley (?). All their children were born in Skegby, Notts. (R‑2)

She was born about 1817 in Derbyshire, and died 1 Dec. 1886 in Stanton Hill, Notts. All their children were born in Skegby. (R‑1, R‑2)

Jane Greaves (25) was born about 1850 in Skegby, Notts. Her name was mistakenly spelled Graves in the 1881 census. She married George Caunt on 3 Oct. 1870 in Mansfield. He was born 16 Dec. 1848 in Skegby. (R‑2)

John Henry Greaves (30) was born 16 July 1853 in Skegby, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottingham. He married Elizabeth Pearson on 28 Dec. 1874. John, a bachelor, was age 21, of Forest Side, Skegby, and a collier by trade. Elizabeth was a spinster, age 19, also of Forest Side, Skegby. The witnesses were William Fletcher and Sarah Ann Pike. The family whispers are that Elizabeth died in childbirth. There is a daughter, Ada Greaves, born around 1873 or 1874 that it is assumed was from this first marriage.

John Henry Greaves married for a second time to Elizabeth Chambers. No certificate for this marriage has been found, but would be 1874-1876. The birth order of the children without dates is unsure. (R‑1)

Lily Greaves (45) was born 27 Jan. 1873 in Forest Skegby, and died in 1928 at 144 Outram St., Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts. She married William Hurt on 20 June 1891 in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts. He was born 24 June 1869 at Victoria St., Radford, and died in Oct. 1935 at 144 Outram St., Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts. At least all their children but Frank were born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, and they were probably all born there. (R‑2)

CHILDREN OF JOHN HENRY GREAVES (30)

John Thomas Greaves (47) was born 15 Jan. 1876 in Skegby. He first married Caroline Ann Fletcher on 6 May 1899 at the parish church, North Wilford, Nottinghamshire. The witnesses were James Fletcher and Mary Palmer. John, a bachelor, was 23. Caroline, a spinster, was 20. Caroline died of entric fever at age 21 years, on 22 March 1900 at 8 Pegg Street, Nottingham. There were no children from this marriage.

John married his second wife, Eliza (or Elizabeth) Welbourn, on 23 June 1901 at St. Barnabas Cathedral, Nottingham. The witnesses were T. Welbourn. and C. Welbourn who are probably Eliza's brother and sister, Thomas and Cecelia Welbourn. John was a widow, age 25. Eliza was a spinster, age 32. Eliza died on 26 March 1948, age 78, in the couple's home/off licence shop, 70 Briar Street, The Meadows. Nottingham. Eliza and daughter Mary ran the shop. John and his son were miners at Clifton pit. All their children were born and/or baptized in The Meadows, Nottingham. (R‑1)
