DESCENDANTS OF ELIAS GRAVES
AND MELISSA DAULTON OF IN, IL & KS
GENERATION 1
Elias Graves (1) was born about
1839 or 1840 in IN, and may have died by 1900 (since he wasn’t found in the
1900 census). It is believed that he may
have been born in Sullivan Co., IN. He
married Melissa Daulton, daughter of Harriet Daulton, on 2 Dec. 1858 in Morgan
Co., IL. She was born about 1841 in IL. His name was previously believed to be
Ellis, since that is what was on the death certificate of his son George.
They were in the 1860 census of
Franklin, Morgan Co., IL, living with her mother. They were in the 1870 census for Drywood, Bourbon Co., KS, and
the 1880 census for Pawnee, Bourbon Co., KS.
He was a farmer. Their first 5
children were born in IL, and the last 2 in KS.
Elias has been confused with
another man of the same name who was born about the same time (in 1836 in IL)
and who also married someone named Melissa.
This other person lived in Fulton Co., IL, and was descended from Thomas
Graves of Hartford, CT (gen. 168). (R‑1)

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF ELIAS GRAVES (1) AND
MELISSA DAULTON
George W. Graves (5) was born 2 (or
6) March 1867 (or 1866) in IL, and died 21 Nov. 1911 in Nevada, Vernon Co.,
MO. George went to Nevada with a friend
from Archie, MO, and was hired by the railroad to cook. When they left the train, they decided to
climb under the standing train. The
first man made it through but George was crushed under the wheels as the train
moved ahead. There was a picture and
article in the Nevada, MO newspaper.
The 1900 census for Missouri lists George born in IL, his father born in
IN, and his mother born in IL.
George married Mary Cordelia
(“Delia”) Cauthon, daughter of John Thomas Cauthon (born 22 Aug. 1848, died 26
Sept. 1928) and Malisa Palestine Todd, in 1893 in Bates Co., MO[1]. Mary was born 4 Nov. 1875 in Deepwater,
Henry Co., MO, and died 17 June 1903 in Bates Co., MO. They were both buried either in Austin Cem.,
near Archie, Cass Co., MO, or in Delozier Cem., a small cemetery 1/2 mile west
of Gerster, MO. This latter cemetery
was terraced and farmed, and all tombstones but one are now gone.
They were in the 1900 census for
Shawnee Twp., Bates Co., MO. He was a
farmer. All their children were born in
MO.
Because George W. Graves died in
1911 and his wife Mary apparently died in childbirth or soon after, much of the
raising of the children was done by Mary's parents. (R‑1)
