Thomas Graves (6) was born 19 Dec. 1756 in Whitfield, Kent, England, died 6 Feb. 1845 at Great Mongeham, near Deal, Kent, England, aged 89, and was buried at Great Mongeham. He married Elizabeth (or Elisabeth) Shelvey on 1 May 1784 at Great Mongeham Church, witnessed by John and Richard Barwick. They were both of Great Mongeham (although she may have been from Shoulden), and both signed with their mark x. Banns were read April 4, 11 and 18. They had to get married since she was pregnant with Anne. She was born in 1762, and died in 1837 at Great Mongeham, aged 75. All their children were baptized at Great Mongeham. (R‑1, R‑3)

James Graves (7) was born 17 Dec. 1758 in Whitfield, Kent, died 13 Nov. 1843 at age 86, and was buried in Great Mongeham. He married Elisabeth Perkins, daughter of William Perkins and Elizabeth Marsh, on 24 Jan. 1784 in Northbourne, Kent, witnessed by Richard Somes and Sarah Kemp. The vicar was Thomas Hutchinson. Neither could read. James was living in Great Mongeham, and banns were read in Great Mongeham on Jan. 4, 11, 18. They had to get married as Elisabeth was about 3 months pregnant with William from about Oct. 1, 1783. All their children were born in Great Mongeham, Kent. (R‑1)

Neither could read. James was living in Great Mongeham. Banns were read in Great Mongeham on Jan. 4, 11, 18. In 1816, Peter was a labourer at Sholden Bank, Deal. John Graves (10) was born 13 May 1764 in Whitfield, Kent, died 7 May 1848 at age 84, and was buried in Great Mongeham, Kent. He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑. The 1841 census showed him living in Lydden at Wicklan Bushes, age 75, with wife Elizabeth, 65, and son Thomas, 25. Also Benjamin Holmans, 18, was living with them, probably the son of Benjamin Holmans and Elizabeth Graves who married in 1822. Their first 4 children seem to have been born in Sutton, Kent, and the last 2 in Great Mongeham, Kent.

The last 2 sons, Thomas and John, were previously attributed to John Graves (#18) (R‑1)

Richard Graves (14) was born 23 Jan. 1774[2] in Whitfield, near Folkestone, Kent, England, and died April-June 1853 in Dover, Kent. He married Elizabeth Harriss on 26 June 1798 at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Dover, Kent, by license[3]. Witnesses were John and Anne Hudson. She was born about 4 April 1779 in Linton, Kent, and died July-Sept. 1847 in Dover, Kent. Their first 3 children were baptized at St. James the Apostle Church, Dover, Kent, and the others at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Dover, Kent. All baptisms are listed in the IGI except for Mary who married George Brockman. (R‑2)

Anne (or Ann) Graves (15) was baptized 28 Nov. 1784 at Great Mongeham, Kent. Ann Graves, spinster, married Joseph Barwick, bachelor, both of Great Mongeham, on 10 Sept. 1806 at Great Mongeham Church, by banns. Both signed with an x.

Ann and Joseph arrived in Tasmania, Australia on 15 Feb. 1841 with their 3 youngest children. Six other children along with their wives and/or children also arrived in Tasmania, some before and some after their parents. John was the only one of the family to remain in England. (R‑3, R‑4)

He married second Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑. The 1841 census for Birchington lists John with wife Mary, and children John, 21, Ann (must be Hannah), 11, and Louisa, 9. All their children were born in Birchington, Kent.

John was previously believed to have married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑ and to have had 2 sons born in Great Mongeham, Thomas and John, now attributed to John Graves (#10). (R‑1, R‑3)

They were related, since William’s uncle James Graves was married to Elisabeth Perkins. The 1841 census for East Studdal, Little Mongeham, listed William as an agricultural labourer, with children Sussanna, 15, John, 15, William, 13, and Mary, 7. Also listed were William Firminger, agricultural labourer, 35, Mary (or Margaret?) his wife, and daughter Margaret, 6. His first child was born in Ripple, Kent, and the others in Sutton, Kent. (R‑1)

William Graves (20) was born 4 July 1784 in Great Mongeham, Kent, died 24 Oct. 1852, at age 69, and was buried in West Langdon, Kent, while living in Martin, East Langdon. His name was spelled Greaves. (Source: West Langdon BT 1813-1905.) He married Elizabeth A. Constable on 17 Feb. 1810 in Great Mongeham, Kent, while he was living in Great Mongeham and she was living in River. Banns were read Jan. 14, 21, 28. Witnesses were Stephen Newing and John Campbell, Rector Ripple C. Philpott officiated, and neither William nor Elizabeth could read. The 1841 census showed him as a shepherd living in West Langdon, age 55, with wife Elizabeth, 55, and 7 children. The 1871 census listed Elizabeth, 86, living alone in East Langdon. All their children were born in Great Mongham with the possible exception of John who may have been born in Martin, East Langdon. (R‑1, R‑2)

She married second William Drake on 10 Oct. 1845 in Shoulden parish church, Kent. (R‑1)

Thomas Graves (38) was born in 1811 and was baptized 29 Sept. 1811, both at Great Mongeham, near Deal, Kent, and died in 1887 in Lydden, near Dover, Kent. He married Margaret Ann Fuller, daughter of Isaac Fuller and Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 31 Sept. 1842 at Lydden, Kent. She was baptized 22 Nov. 1818 in Acrise or Swingfield, Kent, and died in April 1892 in River, Kent. Thomas was a laborer when he married, and neither he nor Margaret could write. The 1871 census gives the date and place of his birth, and states that he was a shepherd. All their children were born at Wickambushes, Lydden. (R‑1, R‑3)

James Graves (61) was born in July 1810 in River, Kent (about 3 miles northwest of Dover), died 22 July 1893 at age 83 in Great Mongeham, Kent, and was buried in Great Mongeham, Kent. He married Elizabeth Ann Wood on 14 July 1833 in Great Mongeham, Kent, witnessed by Robert Fitall and Ann Wood who later married Jan. 11, 1834. Both James and Elizabeth were from Great Mongeham. The rector was C. Dimock, and banns were read June 9, 16, and 23. Elizabeth was born about 1810 in Sutton, Kent (about 6 miles north of Dover, and about 5 miles from River), and died in Sept. 1873 in Eastry, Kent.

They were in the 1841 census for the parish of Great Mongeham, Kent, when he was a shepherd. The 1851 census for Deal Kent shows daughter Eliza as a servant, born in Mongeham, Kent. In the 1851 census for Sandwich, St. Mary, Kent, son James was in the family of John Town, sexton, and his wife Mary, listed as son, 22, agricultural laborer, born in Deal; Mary was born Mary Graves, probably James’ aunt. James and Elizabeth were in the 1861 and 1871 censuses for Great Mongeham, Kent. He was a shepherd. Their first child was born in Great Mongeham, the next 4 in Sholden, and the others in Great Mongeham. (R‑1)

He was invalided out of the Army and worked for London County Council. She was b. 1889 and d. 1969, both at Dover, Kent. No children.

James Graves (91) was born 27 Oct. 1833 in Great Mongeham, Kent, and died in Dec. 1905 in Dover, Kent. He married Ann Pleasant Williams on 2 Oct. 1864 in Great Mongeham. They were both from Great Mongeham. Banns were read Sept. 18, 25, and Oct. 2. Rector was Edward Percy. Ann was born about 1842 in Great Mongeham, Kent. They were in the 1871 census for Deal, Kent, with their first 3 children. They were in the 1881 census for Ripple, Kent, with all 7 of their children. They have not yet been found in the 1991 census. He was an agricultural labourer. Their first 2 children were born in Great Mongeham, the third in Ashley or Sholden, the next 2 in Deal, and the last 2 in Ripple, all in Kent. (R‑1)

Albert Graves (112) was born 26 Dec. 1869 in Ashley, Waldershare, Kent, and died in 1944 in Crundale, Kent, at age 74. He fell off his bicycle going down Romp Hill and died a few months later. He married Elisa Isabella Baker on 8 April 1893 at Waldershare, witnessed by Thomas Baker and Julia Graves, daughter of Thomas Baker.

In 1911 he was a farm labourer. Later he was a farmer and an innkeeper. When and how did he get so much land? (R‑1)

He first married Alice Smith, daughter of George Smith and Harriet ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 26 Dec. 1896 in Rochester, Kent. She was born 27 April 1857 in Rochester, and died 12 Jan. 1945 in Portsmouth. He secondly married Mrs. Sarah Taylor in the 1950’s in Folkestone, Kent. (R‑3)

After he died, she secondly married Mr. Ward in NY, U.S.A. She thirdly married Mr. Swain in England. She was buried in Dresserville Cem., NY.
