Rev. 13 April 2005, Gen. 820
DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GRAVES
OF NC AND MARION CO. & BAXTER CO., AR
GENERATION 1
James (“Jimmie”) Graves (1) was
born in Sept. 1818 in NC, probably in Montgomery Co. He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about
1835[1]. She may have died about 1864 (if Martha was
by the second marriage) or 1868 (if Martha was by the first wife). He married second Nancy Jane Cockrum before
1870, perhaps about 1866. She was born
about 1831 in KY. She had previously
been married to Harvey Gooden (or Goodin).
He married third Mary Cockrum Parrigon (or Parigan) on 14 Aug. 1880 in
Ozark Co., MO[2]. She was a daughter of his second wife, and
James’ step-daughter. She was born in
Nov. 1850 in AR.
Turnbo’s Tales of the Ozarks
stated that Jimmie Graves, one of the oldest men in Baxter Co., Arkansas, was
born in Montgomery Co., NC in 1818, and died in Baxter Co. Jan. 3, 1901. He was buried in Tribbet graveyard (possibly
should be Trivett) on Pigeon Creek. It
mentions son Tom, born in Baxter Co. in 1859, and Billy, son of Jimmie. It also mentions James Absalom Gooden, born
1858, son of Harvey Gooden, who lived with his stepfather, Jimmie Graves, on
Pigeon Creek in Baxter Co.
It is possible that James Graves
was descended from John Graves and Margery Harvey of Randolph Co., NC. Many of their descendants lived in
Montgomery Co., NC, and some later went to Arkansas.
The 1850 census for Fulton Co., AR
lists Harvey Goodwin, with wife Nancy, 19 (the right age), which is probably
Nancy Jane Cockrum and her first husband.
James Graves was in the 1870 census
for Rapps Barren, Marion Co., AR, Whiteville P.O., page 502, dwelling 36, with
11 children, William A., 16, Nancy J., 16, Susan, 14, Sarah, 13, Thomas
Jefferson, 10, James Absalom, 10, Mynerva A., 7, Lenord M., 6, Mary S., 4,
Madocia, 4, and Martha H., 2. Some of
these children were actually by Nancy’s marriege to Harvey Gooden: Nancy J.,
Susan, James Absalom, Mary S., and Madocia.
He was in the 1880 census for Pigeon, Baxter Co., AR, page 269A, with no
wife, children Lenord M., 17, and Martha H., 12, and step-daughter Mary
Parrigon. Living next door in 1880 were
the families of Susan Graves, widow of his son William, and son Thomas Graves,
and living nearby was son Samuel. James
was in the 1900 census for Pigeon, Baxter Co., AR, page 1A, with his third wife
and 2 children. James Graves has not
yet been found in any census before 1870.
