DESCENDANTS OF STEPNEY GRAVES AND ADELINE ------ OF TN & KY

GENERATION 1

Stepney Graves (1) was born about 1839 in TN, and died 1876-1880 (since he wasn’t in the 1880 census with his family and his wife was a widow in 1880).  He married Adeline (or Adiline or Adline) ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born in July 1840 in TN.  They were in the 1870 census for Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, when he was listed as a pastor, Adeline was listed as mulatto, and all other family members were listed as black.  They were in the 1880 census for Madison Twp., St. Francis Co., AR, where Adeline was a widow and mulatto, Isaac was mulatto, and all the other children were listed as black.  In 1900, Adeline was living with the family of her son Wesley in North Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR.  In 1900, her father was listed as born in Scotland and her mother in TN, whereas in 1880 both her parents were listed as born in NC.  All their children were born in TN.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF STEPNEY GRAVES (1) AND ADELINE ------

Wesley Graves (5) was born in Feb. 1868 in TN[1].  He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1890.  She was born in Dec. 1872 in TN.  They were in the 1900 census for North Little Rock, Ward 8, Hill Twp., Pulaski Co., AR, with his mother and his brother William living with them.  They were in the 1910 census for 817 Hickory St., Argenta City, Ward 3, Hill Twp., Pulaski Co., AR.  They were in the 1930 census for North Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR, with no children in the household.  He was a railroad brakeman.  All their children were born in AR.

  8.   Mary Adline Graves, b. Sept. 1890.

  9.   James Graves, b. April 1892.

  10.  Leo Graves, b.c. 1900.

Horace Stepney Graves (6) was born in July 1870 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, and died 4 July 1913.  He married Isabella (“Belle”) Doncla Harper about 1897.  She was born in May 1874 (or 1873[2]) in IL, and died in 1939.  They were in the 1900 census for Galesburg, Ward 4, Knox Co., IL.  They were in the 1910 census for St. Paul, Ward 8, Ramsey Co., MN.  According to both census records, her father was born in Canada and her mother in OH.  Belle remarried to Samuel J. Fountain about 1907, and they were living at 3336 Indiana Ave., Chicago, IL in 1930.  Samuel was born about 1878 in GA.

Horace was a clergyman, according to the census records.  His granddaughter said he was an itinerant pastor and moved from church to church.  Perhaps the last church he pastored was in Evanston, IL, and church fires there have burned all records.  (R‑1)

[1] Although the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses gave his place of birth as TN, the 1910 and 1930 censuses gave his and his parents’ birthplace as KY.  Perhaps the source for the KY location was his wife, and she didn’t know the correct information.

[2] R‑1 gave 1873 as her birthdate, and the 1900 census gave May 1874.
