DESCENDANTS OF LAURENCE GREAVES AND MARY TIERNEY OF IRELAND, NY & NJ

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Laurence Greaves (1) was born in May 1848 in Ireland.  He married Mary Tierney about 1872.  She was born about 1855 in Ireland.  The 1880 census for Manhattan, New York City, NY, page 33D, listed him as age 33, stableman, wife Mary, 25, and son Willie, 3, living on Washington St.  The 1900 census for Manhattan, NY, page 31B, impossible to read some of the entries, stated they had 12 children and listed the four still living, all born in NY, and spelled their name as Graves.  The 1910 census for 9th Ward, 88 Barrow St., Manhattan, NY, page 75A, listed children William, James and Kathrine, gave their year of immigration as 1872, and said they ran a boarding house.  It also stated that Laurence, Mary, and their parents were from the English part of Ireland (probably northern Ireland).  (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF LAURENCE GREAVES (1) AND MARY TIERNEY

William J. (“Willie”) Greaves (2) was born about 1877 in NY.  He lived at 88 Barrow St., New York City, NY.  He married Frances Wilson, daughter of William Joseph Wilson and Katherine Dempsey of Jersey City, NJ, about 1902-1904[1] at Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church, Jersey City.  She was born 17 April 1887 in NJ (although the 1930 census indicated she was born about 1890).  Most of their children were buried in Holy Cross Cem., North Arlington, NJ.  (R‑1)

  7.  Lawrence (or Laurence) R. Greaves, b. 3 March 1912 (Hoboken, NJ).

  8.  James Lawrence Greaves, b. 29 March 1916 (Hoboken, NJ).

  10.  Frances X. Greaves, b. 28 May 1925, d. 2 May 1976 (Jersey City, NJ).

+11.  Raymond J. Greaves, b. 6 July 1926, m. Theresa Chirico, d. 9 Jan. 1981.

  12.  Daniel E. Greaves, b. 3 Aug. 1929, d. Aug. 1980 (Jersey City, NJ).

[1] The estimated marriage date of William and Frances is based on the 1930 census that said he married at age 19 and she married at age 14, and gave their ages as 45 and 40 respectively.  That contrasts with the date of 1912 given by R‑1.
