DESCENDANTS OF LEONARD GRAVES AND REBECCA BINGHAM

OF CULPEPER CO., VA

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Leonard Graves (1) was born about 1765 and died 1831-1838, both in Culpeper Co., VA.  He married Rebecca Susannah Bingham on 9 Jan. 1795 in Culpeper Co., VA.  In a law suit in Culpeper Co., Nov. 16, 1838, Rebecca was sued for indebtedness after Leonard died.  Named in the suit were William Paul and wife Jane, James, Stephen, and a daughter Susan who married Amistead Dennis on May 12, 1831.

A couple of possible ancestries for Leonard have been suggested.  It seems most likely that he is descended from Francis Graves, previously thought to be the youngest son of Capt. Thomas Graves of VA, via Francis2, Thomas3, John4.  John4, born 10 Dec. 1712 in that part of Essex Co., VA that later became Spotsylvania Co.  He married Susannah Dicken.  His sons included John5, b. 1737, m. Ann Rice, and Isaac5 Graves, b. 1741, m(2) Elizabeth Cowherd.  The descendants of John5 included use of the names Stephen, Claiborne, and others.  Because of where they lived and name similarities, this is the part of the family where a connection is expected to be found.

It has also been suggested that Leonard is connected to Thomas W. Graves who married Mildred P. Thrift, 7 March 1825, Albemarle Co., VA, or to Thomas Graves, born about 1787 who married second Phebe Ames, and moved to MO.  Both of these men were descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA through his son Thomas.  However, DNA testing has shown that is not the connection.  (R‑1)

Stephen A. Graves (3) was born 6 March 1799 in Culpeper Co., VA, and died 23 Aug. 1862[1].  He married Margaret Boswell Orme, daughter of Zachariah Orme and Susannah Bingham, about 1826.  She was born 28 Aug. 1803 in VA, and died 23 May (or July) 18701 in Bradley, Lafayette Co., AR.  They were both buried in Graves Cem., Cleveland, Conway Co., AR.

Family legend says that Stephen had a brother John who also moved to AR, but this doesn’t seem to be correct.  According to The Goodspeed Biographical & Historical Memoirs of Southern Arkansas, Stephen and his family lived in 17 states before settling in Arkansas in about 1848 in what is now Cleveland Co.

Their first 3 children were born in Culpeper Co., VA, and were buried in Graves Cem., Cleveland, Conway Co., AR.  (R‑2, R‑3)

Martha Graves (5) was born about 1802 in Culpeper Co., VA, and died before 1838.  She married Adam H. Huffman, son of Daniel Huffman and Margaret Bumgardner, about 1823.  He was born about 1800, probably in Madison Co., VA.  (R‑1)

Leonard B. Graves (10) was born 8 July 1811 in Culpeper Co., VA, and died 3 June 1896.  He married Susan Threlkeld Day on 18 April 1833 in Albemarle Co., VA[3].  The minister was Francis Bowman, Presbyterian.  Bondsman was Charles Day, and witness Ira Garrett.  Susan was born 24 Feb. 1816 and died about 1880-82.  According to census records, their first child was born in VA, the next 4 in OH, and the others in MO.  The first 7 children were in the 1850 census of Jefferson Co., MO, and the others were from the 1870 census for Marion Twp., St. Francois Co., MO.  The occupation of Leonard was listed in the 1870 census as wheelwright, and in later censuses as farmer.  (R‑6)

Graves (20) was born 22 July 1827 in Culpeper Co., VA, and died 18 June 1888 in Bradley Co., AR.  He was a saddler.  He first married Susan Morgan.  She was born in 1833 in SC, and died 28 April 1863 in Bradley Co., AR.  He secondly married Celia C. Rodgers[4] (or Cecelia C. Ragins[5]).  She was born 5 April 1838 and died 24 Aug. 1916.  Beverly and both wives were buried in Graves Cem., Cleveland Co., AR.  All his children were born in AR, at least the first 2 in Bradley Co.  (R‑2, R‑3)

Susan Rebecca Graves (25) was born 21 Sept. 1840 in WV[6], died 18 Aug. 1926 in Cleveland Co., AR, and was buried in the Hebron Cem.[7]  She was living with the Mitchells, her daughter’s family, when she died.  She first married William H. G. Carson, son of William Carson and Mary Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 15 Oct. 1860 in Bradley Co., AR.  He served in the Civil War in 2nd Ark. Calvary, and never returned from the war.  He was born 31 Dec. 1830 in AL, and died in a POW Camp in Pulaski Co., AR.  Both their children were born in Bradley Co., AR, and were married in Cleveland Co., AR.  She secondly married Samuel Morgan.  There were no children by this second marriage.  “Aunt Susan” was given the Graves Bible, since she was the only daughter.  (R‑2, R‑3)

Calvin Cooper Graves (26), called “Uncle Doc”, “Dock” or C. C., was born 24 May 1844 in Lamar Co., TX, and died 15 Nov. 1915[8].  He married Marie or Mary (“Mellie”?) S. Merrill.  She was born 5 April 1848 in GA, and died 4 Nov. 1899.  They were both buried in Graves Cem., Cleveland, AR.  They only had one child.

Graves, dealer in groceries, provisions, etc., Kingsland, Ark..  Among the many enterprises necessary to complete the commercial resources of a town or city, none is of more importance than that of grocer, as being one of the main factors in furnishing our food supply.  Prominent in the establishment of this business is the establishment of Mr. Calvin C. Graves, which was established in February 1886 and now has a stock at $600 and the annual sales of about $6000.  Mr. Graves was born in Lamar County, Texas in 1844 and was the son of Stephen and Margaret Orm Graves, natives of Virginia.  The father was born in Virginia in 1799 and lived in 17 different states before coming to what is now Cleveland County in 1848.  He died in 1862 and his wife in 1870.  He farmed here but was a tanner by trade.  He was of Irish ancestry.”  (R‑2, R‑3)

Charles Leonard ("Charley") Graves (59) was born 8 July 1849 in Jefferson Co., MO, died 3 Sept. 1916, and was buried in the Concord Cem., near St. Genevieve, MO.  He first married Amanda Jane Eaves in 1872.  She was born 20 Oct. 1855 in MO, and died 22 Feb. 1880.  The 1880 census showed Charles and children living with Amanda's brother William D. Eaves and family in Watkins Twp., Dent Co., MO in June 1880.

After Amanda's death, he married second Maggie E. (Chandler) Whittaker 1 March 1885 in Springfield, MO.  She was born 19 Sept. 1867  and died 7 April 1925.  Charles and Maggie divorced in 1887 (Christian Co., MO Book 185, no. 604).  They remarried, and divorced again 14 Sept. 1905 in Greene Co., MO (Greene Co., MO div. records 40029, Book 92, p. 14, Office of County Clerk).  They lived in Marion Twp., Christian Co., Chadwick area for at least one year (personal property tax not paid, records line 0874, June 1, 1887, means he probably lived there in 1886).  Charles returned to the St. Genevieve area, died there, and was buried with his father, Leonard.

Vernon, Springfield, Greene Co., MO.  The 1900 census for Campbell Twp., Greene Co., MO lists Charles L. Graves, stone mason, 50, b. July 1849, married 16 years, b. MO, parents b. Mary (“Molly” or “Mollie”) Carson (116) was born 8 Aug. 1862 in Bradley Co., AR, and died 10 May 1942.  She married Augustus W. West on 17 Jan. 1881 in Dorsey Co. or Cleveland Co., AR.  He was born 18 June 1859 in AR, and died 21 May 1943.  They were both buried in the West Cem., off the Crossroad’s road (is this same as Cross Roads Cem.?), Cleveland Co., AR.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in AR.  (R‑2, R‑3)

  239.  Edward W. West, b. Dec. 1887, m. Jennie Crandall, d. possibly 1943.  They had 4 children; one may have been Lou Ellen West.  Jennie d. 30 Nov. 1875, aged 23 years and 10 months, was bur. in Oak Grove Cem., Hopkinton, RI, dau. of J.A. and F.C. Crandall.[11]

  240.  Eura B. West, b. 24 Sept. 1891, m. Carl Cable, d. 10 June 1934.  Bur. Cross Roads Cem., Cleveland Co., AR.

 

William Sarah (“Sally” or “Sallie”) French Carson (117) was born 4 April 1864 in Bradley Co., AR, and died 15 March 1930 in Cleveland Co., AR.  She first married David Rouse.  There were no children by this marriage.  She married second Robert Bruce (“Bob”) Mitchell on 3 April 1890 in Cleveland Co., AR.  He was born 4 April 1866 in MS or TX, and died 11 March 1930 in Cleveland Co., AR.  They were both buried in Hebron Cem., Cleveland Co., AR.  They lived in Hebron Community, near Kingsland, AR.  All their children were born and married in Cleveland Co., AR.  (R‑2, R‑3)

Cordelia Ann (“Annie”) Cox (128) was born 13 May 1869 in MO, and died 10 Jan. 1944 in AR.  She married William Marshall Brown Martin in 1880 in Taney Co., MO.  He was born 27 April 1859 in Polk Co., MO, and died 20 June 1933.  They were both buried in Gaither Cem., Boone Co., AR.  Their first child was born in Taney Co., MO, the next 6 in Lead Hill, Boone Co., AR, the eighth in Taney Co., MO, the next in Lead Hill, Boone Co., the next in Boone Co., the next 2 in Lead Hill, and the last in Bergman, Boone Co., AR.  (R‑1, R‑7)

[1]Birth and death dates from family Bible of Stephen Graves (in possession of Billie Mitchell Langford in 1997).  According to R‑3, he died 22 Aug. 1862 and she died 23 July 1870.
