Thomas Greaves (1) was born about 1840 in Hull (Kingston upon Hull), Yorkshire (now Humberside), England, and died before 8 Jan. 1896 when his son Walter was married. He married Mary Leesing, daughter of Joseph Leesing, on 2 Jan. 1861 in St. John's Church, Hull. The father of Thomas was Samuel Greaves, from Thomas's marriage certificate. At age 11 on 30 April 1851, Thomas was living with a family in Cottingham, Hull, as a servant. His marriage certificate showed him in Jan. 1861 as a dock labourer. He was listed 5 Feb. 1865 as labourer, 3 April 1871 as railway labourer, 31 May 1871 as cartman (on Walter's birth certificate), 4 April 1881 as night soil contractor (drainage), and on Walter's marriage certificate in Jan. 1896 as labourer. He lived in various places in Hull. All their children were born in Hull. (R-1)

Thomas Greaves (2) was born in June 1862 in Hull. He married Emma Greaves. His occupation 6 April 1891 was cart rubbyman (general). Both their children were born at 47 Madeley Street, Hull. (R-1)

Walter Greaves (4) was born 31 May 1871 at 125 Day Street, Hull, and died 15 May 1915 in the Dardanelles in World War I. He married Kate Cograve, daughter of George Cograve (or Coggrave?) and Sarah Adams, on 8 Jan. 1896 in Holy Trinity, Hull.

His obituary: "R.N.R. Man Leaves Ten Children

Walter Greaves of the R.N.R., who was killed in action in the Dardanelles. His home was 3, Richmond Terrace, Harrow Street, and he leaves a wife and ten children, seven under 14 years of age. He has been 13 years in the R.N.R., and before being called up was working the Wilson Line. His eldest son, Private Walter Greaves, is in the 11th East Yorks. Mrs. Greaves expresses her thanks to all relatives and friends in her bereavement."

Walter was listed as a rallyman driver 6 April 1891, as a labourer on his marriage certificate 8 Jan. 1896, and as a marine fireman in 1907 on Edward's birth certificate. Kate was listed as a domestic servant 6 April 1891. They lived in Hull. Both Edward and Elsie were born at 3 Richmond Terrace, Harrow St., Hull. (R-1)
