DESCENDANTS OF PETER GRAVES
AND SARAH MERION
GENERATION 1
Peter Graves (1) was born about 1784 in North Carolina, and died before 26 March 1851 (probably in Monroe Co., IN). On that date in Monroe Co., IN, Peter’s son James conveyed land to his brother, William; James was listed as “heir at law of Peter Graves, deceased”. Peter married Sarah Merion (or Marion), daughter of Bartholomew Marion, on 21 Nov. 1809 in Surry Co., NC. Sarah was born about 1784 in NC, and died in 1861 according to R‑3. Sarah was recorded on the 1860 Lawrence Co., IN census living with her son William. R‑2 notes that Daniel Merion, Sarah’s brother, was the bondsmen at the marriage of Peter and Sarah. When another brother Robert Marion married Polly Alberty in 1823, a Peter Graves was the bondsman. This is not the same Peter Graves, son of Peter Graves, Sr., who married Sarah Carmichael in 1810 and died in 1814. The following census information may help distinguish these families.
The 1810 census of Surry Co., NC lists the household of Peter Graves with 1 male over 45 (b. 1765 or earlier, probably Peter Sr.), 1 male 16 to 25 (b. 1785-1794, probably Peter Jr.), 1 male 10 to 15 (b. 1795-1800), 2 males under 10 (b. 1800-1809), 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female over 45. Listed on the same page as this Peter Graves is a Thomas Graves with 1 male 16-25 (b. 1785-1794), 2 males under 10, (b. 1800-1809), 1 female 16-26, and 1 female over 45 (b. 1765 or earlier).
The 1820 census of Surry Co., NC (Captain Daniel Marrian’s Dist.) lists the household of (this) Peter Graves with 3 males under 10 (b. 1810-1820), 1 male over 45 (b. 1775 or earlier), 1 female 16-26 (b. 1794-1804; probably Sarah Merion, although the age is off).
The 1830 census of Surry Co., NC lists the household of (this) Peter Graves with 1 male 10-15 (b. 1815-1820), 2 males 15-20 (b. 1810-1815), 1 male 40-50 (b. 1780-1790), 1 female 10-15 (b. 1815-1820), and 1 female 40-50 (b. 1780-1790, Sarah Merion).
The 1830 census of Monroe Co., IN, p. 162, lists the household of Peter Graves with 1 male 60-70 (b. 1760-1770), and 1 female 80-90 (b. 1740-1750). This is probably Peter Graves, Sr. and an unknown female.
The 1840 census of Monroe Co., IN, p. 266 lists the household of (this) Peter Graves with 1 male 20-30 (b. 1810-1820), 1 male 50-60 (b. 1780-1790), and 1 female 40-50 (b. 1790-1800; probably Sarah Merion, although again the age is off).
The 1850 census of Indian Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN lists the household of (this) Peter Graves, age 66, born about 1784 in NC, a farmer, with Sarah, age 66, born about 1784 in NC.
R‑5 notes that Peter is not listed on the 1856 Plat Map of Indian Creek Twp.; Thomas Oliphant and a William Graves own parts of Peter’s land at that time.
In Aubrey Graves book Graves Family History and Genealogy, 1968, several errors have been uncovered. The “Inventory of Peter Graves Estate” on p. 158 has incorrectly been attributed to Peter Graves, Sr. of genealogy 11. The inventory is actually for his son Peter Graves, Jr. following his death in 1814. The assertion that Peter Graves, Sr. and Peter Graves, Jr. both married in Surry County in 1809 is also in error: the Peter Graves who married Sarah Merion (Marion) is probably this Peter Graves. The Peter Graves who married Sarah Carmichael is Peter Graves, Jr. also of genealogy 11. Also, incorrectly asserted in Aubrey’s genealogy is the statement that Peter, Jr. and Sara(h) Carmichael are buried in Carmichael Cemetery in Greene Co., IN. Sarah married second William Martindale by 1827 and was married to him for nearly twenty years before her death. These stones may represent memorials erected for Peter, Jr. and Sarah Carmichael or for Peter Graves and Sarah Merion of this genealogy.
It is interesting to note that Peter C. Graves and Nancy Jane Nations (genealogy 350) were also in Greene Co., IN in 1860. (R‑2, R‑3, R‑5, R‑7)

CHILDREN OF PETER GRAVES (1)
William Graves (2) was born 5 Feb. 1815 in NC, died 17 Aug. 1873, and was buried in Graves Cem. on the old Graves farm northwest of Springville in Lawrence Co., IN. He married Martha (“Patsy”) Long, daughter of Tobias Long (formerly of Surry Co., NC) and Fannie Frick, on 20 Oct. 1836 in Greene Co., IN. She was born about 1814 in NC, died 8 Oct. 1897, and was also buried in Graves Cem.. They were recorded on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Lawrence Co., IN; the children were all born in Indiana. William’s mother Sarah, age 73, lived with them in 1860. (R‑3, R‑4, R‑6, R‑7, R‑503)

James Graves (5) was born about 1823 in NC, and died between 1860 and 1870. He married Sarah Jane Dobson on 18 March 1847 in Greene Co., IN. She was born about 1827 in Indiana. They were listed on the 1850 census for Monroe Co., IN. This family was listed on the 1860 census in Fairplay, Greene Co., IN; Sarah was listed on the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Beech Creek, Greene Co., IN. Two grandsons, Harley Graves, born about 1874 in Indiana and Albert Graves, born about 1877 in Indiana were living with Sarah in 1880. In 1880 Sarah listed the birthplaces of her parents as TN.
It is not certain whether the grandsons listed in the 1880 census were sons of William, James Franklin, or possibly Margaret. The lack of a place of birth for their father in the 1880 census would indicate that maybe they were Margaret’s sons. However, since James Franklin Graves can’t be found in 1880, and there is a possible marriage in Greene Co. for a William Graves that could be the one born 1852, it is believed that James is most likely the father.
