John C. Graves (1) was probably born about 1809 in VA. He married Frances Bew. It is likely that John was a brother of William Jefferson Graves and a son of William Graves and Henrietta Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑ of genealogy 889. John may have been the John Graves in the 1830 census for King & Queen Co., age 20-30, 1 male under 5, 1 female 20-30. John may have died by 1840 and the Frances Graves in the 1840 census for Gloucester Co., VA may have been his widow. The 1850 census for Gloucester Co., VA, listed James E. Graves, 20, oysterman, Susan E. Graves (sister), 17, Claiborne A. Graves, 10, and Tabitha Shackleford, 55. Living next door to them was a family headed by Zachary Shackleford, 29, oysterman. (R‑1)

James C. Graves (3) was born about 1830 in VA, and died in 1884. He first married Susan Ellen Davis (or Susan C. Davis), daughter of James Davis and Polly ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 12 Nov. 1855. She was born 15 Dec. 1835 in VA, and died in 1874. He married second Henrietta Williams on 10 Jan. 1875. She was born about 1845 in VA.
