Anton Sutter drowned in Lake Monona in a boating accident, as reported in the following newspaper article.

Wisconsin State Journal, Friday, 26 July, 1940

Two Boys Prove Heroes

Man Drowns, 3 Saved as Boat Capsizes

Anton Sutter, 30, Pine Bluff cheesemaker and special Dane county sheriff's deputy, drowned and his wife and two companions were saved when the outboard motor boat in which the four were riding capsized 400 feet off Hoboken Beach in Lake Monona at 6 p. m. Thursday.

Sutter's death was the fifth drowning in Madison's four lakes since June 30.

Mrs. Sutter, Patrick Powers, 35, Hoboken Beach, and Mrs. Powers were rescued by Jerome Jordan, 15, and Fred Statz, 15, both of Hoboken Beach, in one boat, and by Leonard Johnson, 302 Forest St.,  Robert Reque, Hoboken Beach, and Joe Gotzion, 423 Powers Ave., in a second boat.

Johnson, who is chauffeur for Pres. C. A. Dykstra of the University of Wisconsin, said Jordan and Statz were first to reach the overturned craft.  Both youths plunged into the water and held up Powers and the struggling women until Johnson and his companions arrived.

Police Inspector Leo J. Kinney, who witnessed the accident, said the Powers boat left the pier in front of the Powers cottage only a few minutes before the fatal capsizing.  The 32 - horsepower craft tipped over after making two sharp turns at top speed, Kinney reported.

Johnson said he and Reque were fishing when they saw the accident.  The pair hastily rowed to shore, attached Johnson's outboard motor, and sped back out into the lake.  Jordan and Statz were trying to keep the survivors afloat.

"Save the women first!" Powers shouted.

Statz went to aid the women, who were wearing life preservers, and Jordan struggled to save the  210-pound Powers, who had lost his grip on the slippery hull.

Just as the Johnson boat reached the scene, Powers shouted:  "I can't make it any longer."

Johnson and the others managed to pull the three survivors into their boat.  Once on shore, Powers, delirious, had to be strapped into a county ambulance before being taken to Wisconsin General hospital, where officials today reported he is "fine."

Mrs. Sutter and Mrs. Powers told Sheriff Edward A. Fischer Sutter was sitting on the deck of the motor boat when it capsized.  Indications, Fischer said, pointed to Sutter's having been struck on the head when the craft overturned, for he apparently had sunk immediately and without struggle.

Powers, Fischer said, dived several times for Sutter immediately after he sank, but soon was forced by exhaustion to cling to the boat's bottom.

Three hours after the drowning, County Sgt. O. F. Larson and Roland Runge found Sutter's body in 12 feet of water.  Others participating in the dragging were Ray Case, town of Monona officer, Fischer, and Undersheriff Elmer Ottum.

Mr. Sutter's survivors are the widow, Dunhille;  two sons, Robert and Donald, at home;  his mother, Mrs. Martha Sutter, East Bristol, and three sisters, Mrs. Emil Hauser and Mrs. Adelbert Mautz, both of East Bristol, and Mrs. Edwin Gmeinder, Marshall.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a. m. Monday in the Coyle funeral home, Cross Plains, and at 9 in St. Mary's church, Pine Bluff, with the Rev. Alex Zuern officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery, Pine Bluff.  (R‑1, R‑2)
