Isaac Grave (8) was born about Feb. 1801, and died 23 Feb. 1832 in Dearham, Cumberland, England. He married Jane Gallantree on 7 June 1824 in St. Mungo's, Dearham, Cumberland. She was born 1 Oct. 1803 in Workington, Cumberland, and died 17 May 1879 in Dearham, Cumberland. Jane was head of household, widow, 56, in the 1861 census for Dearham, Cumberland, with her son James, single, 32, and her granddaughters Betsy (daughter of her daughter Jane), 7, and Mary (daughter of her daughter Ann), 1, living with her. CHILDREN OF ISAAC GRAVE (8) AND JANE GALLANTREE
James Graves (11) was born about Sept. 1828 in Dearham, Cumberland, and died 3 Nov. 1893 in Rosegill, Cumberland. He married Catherine Dockray, daughter of John Dockray and Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born 16 April 1840 in Birkby, Cumberland, and died 24 Jan. 1926 in Netherton, Cumberland. Probably all their children were born in Dearham, Cumberland, although the birth places of Ann, Margaret and James are not known for sure.
It appears possible that none of the following children are those of James Graves. Catherine is in the 1871 census for Dearham, Cumberland, living with her parents as Catherine Oliver (perhaps because of a first marriage to Mr. Oliver), married, 30. Also in the household were grandchildren Ann Jane Dockray, 9, Elizabeth Dockray, 5, and Isaac Dockray, 1, presumably all children of Catherine. In the 1881 census for Dearham, Cumberland, James Graves, unmarried, 52, coal miner, was living on Main St. In his household were Margaret Dockray (presumably an incorrect name for Catherine), servant, unmarried, 40, and the following Dockray children: Isaac, 11, Margaret, 9, John, 4, Mary, 6, and Tom, 2, all born in Dearham. In the 1891 census for Dearham, Cumberland, on Main St., is James Grave, head, 61, coal miner, Catherine Grave, wife, 51, and Tom Dockray, boarder, 12. The 1901 census for Ellenborough and Ewanrigg, Cumberland, listed Catherine Graves, head, married, 63, and children Isaac Dockray, 30, single, John Dockray, 23, single, Thomas Dockray, 21, single, and Margaret Anderson, married, 28. The children of Catherine are always listed with the Dockray surname; perhaps some of them later added the Graves surname because that is the name their mother used. (R‑1)
