DESCENDANTS OF ISAAC GRAVES OF HANCOCK CO., MS

GENERATION 1

Isaac Graves (1) was probably born about 1770, perhaps in VA. He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was probably born about 1770-1780. He married second Celeste Rochon, widow of Simon Favre, and daughter of Louis Augustin Rochon and Marie Angelique Jeanne Simon, before 1820. Simon was born 31 May 1760 and died in 1813. Isaac and Celeste lived in Pearlington, Hancock Co., MS. Isaac was a judge in Hancock Co.

Children of Celeste by her first marriage on 25 March 1801 were: Jean Baptiste Favrre, b. 2 Aug. 1802; Augustus Favrre, b. 17 July 1804; Onezan Favre, b. 23 Dec. 1806; Louisa Eucharist Favre, b. 15 May 1809; Marguerite Favre, b. 17 Jan. 1812; Carolota Favre, b.c. 1813.

Hancock Co. was created from Mobile District in 1812, the eastern part of the Mississippi Territory became the Alabama Territory in 1817, and later the same year Mississippi became the 20^th state. Isaac was in the 1820 census for Hancock Co., MS, page 37, with 2 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-18, 2 males 16-26, 2 males 26-45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45, and slaves. He was in the 1840 census for Hancock Co., MS, page 231, with 1 male 15-20 (probably son James), 1 male 70-80, 1 female 50-60, and no slaves. On page 230 of the 1840 census for Hancock Co., MS was William Graves, born about 1790-1800, possibly a son of Isaac. Isaac could not be found in the 1830 or 1850 censuses, probably having died before 1850. In the 1810 census, the only head of household named Isaac Graves who fits is one in Nelson Co., VA, page 772, with 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-44 (probably Isaac), 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 16-44 (probably his wife).

Listed next to Isaac Graves in the 1810 census for Nelson Co., VA were Snead Graves (born before 1765), Snead Graves (born 1766-1784), and John Graves (born 1766-1784). If this is the same Isaac Graves, then he is related to Hugh Rice Graves (gen. 234), and probably descended from Snead Graves Sr.

Also in the 1850 census for Hancock Co., MS, Shieldsborough Twp., page 50, was John Graves, 36, sheriff, born in Marion Co., MS, and his wife Sarah, 35. He may have been a son of Isaac Graves. (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF ISAAC GRAVES (1)

James Graves (2) was born about 1821 in MS. He married Florentine Netto about 1843. She was born about 1827 in MS. They were in the 1850 census for Gainesville Twp., Hancock Co., MS, page 65, with 2 children, Celisle J. and Isaac F. They were in the 1870 census for Pearlington, Hancock Co., MS, page 278, with children Isaac, Louise and Pealonce (?), and his occupation was mechanic. They were in the 1880 census for Pearlington, Hancock Co., MS, page 269D, with children Isaac and Louisa. His occupation in 1880 was county judge. All their children were born in MS. (R‑1)

GENERATION 3

CHILDREN OF JAMES GRAVES (2) AND FLORENTINE NETTO

Celeste J. Graves (3) was born about 1845 in MS. In the 1850 census it looked as if her name was spelled Celisle. She married William Gacy (?). He was born about 1845 in MS. They were in the 1870 census for Pearlington, Hancock Co., MS, page 278, living next door to her parents, James and Florentine Graves.
