GENERATION 1

 

William Graves (1) was born 19 Aug. 1815 and died 7 Dec. 1884, both in Nova Scotia, Canada.  He married Catherine Fader on 26 Aug. 1836 in NS.  She was born 31 Dec. 1820 in East Chester, NS, and died in 1893 in Halifax, NS.  He is probably the one in the 1861 census for Halifax, NS, with 6 males (including him), 3 of whom were 5-15 and couldnŐt write, and 3 females, 1 of whom was over 15 and couldnŐt write.  They were in the 1871 census for Halifax, Halifax West, NS, when he was a trader.  They were in the 1881 census for Halifax City, NS, when he was a butcher, with son Noah living with them.  At least their last 7 children were born in St. MargaretŐs Bay, Halifax Co., NS, except for John, who was born in East Dover, Halifax Co., NS.  (R‑3)

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1) AND CATHERINE FADER

Charles Henry Graves (2) was born 15 Sept. 1838, and died 13 March 1918 in Halifax, Halifax Co., NS.  He married Catherine Boutilier on 19 Dec. 1860.  She was born about 1842 in St. MargaretŐs Bay, Halifax Co., NS, and died 25 Dec. 1914 in Halifax, Halifax Co., NS.  They were in the 1871 census for Black Point, Halifax West, NS, when Catherine was listed as French and the others were listed as Scotch.  He was an express teamer and she was a dress maker in 1871.

Ann Catherine Graves (3) was born 31 May 1840 in East Dover and died 27 Dec. 1930 in Bedford, both in Halifax Co., NS.  She married James Hubley, son of Alexander Hubley and Christine M. Eisenhauer, in Jan. 1858 in the Baptist Church, Halifax, NS.  He was born 30 March 1823 in Black Point, Halifax Co., NS, and died 2 April 1920.  He had first married Angelia Weinacht.  All their children were born in Black Point, Halifax Co., NS.  (R‑4)

Frances Elizabeth Graves (4) was born 21 June (or July) 1842 in Lunenburg (or Black Point, Halifax Co.), Nova Scotia, and died 12 Aug. 1912 in Black Point, Halifax Co., NS.  She married Robert Johnston, son of John Johnston and Rebecca ‑‑‑‑‑‑, in 1858.  He was born about 1830 in Truro, Colchester Co., NS, and died in 1918.  They were in the 1881 census for Black Point, Halifax Co., NS, listed as Baptist, Irish except for Frances who was English.  All their children were born in Black Point, NS.  (R‑4)

John Henry Graves (7) was born 5 Dec. 1847 in East Dover, Halifax Co., NS, and died in 1901 in NS.  He married Elizabeth Catherine Morash on 14 Jan. 1868 in NS.  She was born 17 March 1851 and died in 1901, both in East Dover, NS.  They seem to be the ones in the 1871 census for Prospect Road, Halifax West, NS, when they were all listed as Episcopalian, Eliza as German, and John and Amos as Scotch.  Living next door in 1871 were William Graves, 21, Scotch, and Sarah Graves, 48, German.  John and Eliza were in the 1881 census for Upper Prospect, Halifax, NS, living next to William Graves and wife Charlotte, and Alfred Graves and wife Ann; all Graves families listed as German.  All their children were born and died in East Dover, NS, except for Thomas who was born in Blind Bay, NS.  (R‑3)

Lydia Graves (11) was born about 1859 in St. MargaretŐs Bay, Halifax Co., NS, and died 5 Jan. 1899.  She married Henry Dakin Gibson, son of Charles Edward Gibson and Emily Cecilia Dakon, on 30 Dec. 1880 in Truro, Colchester Co., NS.  He was born 1 Jan. 1852 in Bridgetown, Annapolis Co., NS, and died 21 Aug. 1930 in Halifax, Halifax Co., NS.  (R‑4)

Thomas Graves (35) was born 27 Jan. 1873 in Blind Bay, Halifax Co., NS, Canada, and died in 1935 in East Dover, Halifax Co., NS.  He married Eva Esther Harnish, daughter of John Alexander Harnish and Mary Sophia Morash.  She was born 25 Dec. 1869, died 25 July 1964, and was buried 28 July 1964, all in East Dover, Halifax Co., NS.  All their children were born in East Dover.  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3)

Selvin Thomas Graves (44) was born 23 Feb. 1901 and died 9 Dec. 1943, both in East Dover, Halifax Co., NS.  He married Thelma Georgina Longard, daughter of George H. Longard and Catherine E. Fader.  She was born 21 July 1912 in Bayside, Halifax Co., NS, and died 24 July 1998 in Halifax, NS.  (R‑1, R‑3)

Cecil Owen Graves (46) was born in May 1904 in East Dover, Halifax Co., NS, and died 6 March 1963.  He married Winnifred Ethel Crooks, daughter of Albert Freeman Crooks and Effie Melissa ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 14 Sept. 1930 in PeggyŐs Cove, Halifax Co., NS.  She was born about 1902 and died in 1988.  (R‑3)
