DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GREAVES AND MARY ANN ------ OF SADDLEWORTH, YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

John Greaves (1) was born about 1784-1791 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England, and died after 1861. He married Mary Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1790-1791 in Cartington, Lancashire (possibly the Manor of Cartington, near Manchester, or possibly Carrington, Lancs.), and died before 1861. They were in the 1841 census for the Parish of Saddleworth, Rochdale, Yorkshire, when John was a constable, and the 3 older children worked in the textile industry. They were in the 1851 census for Saddleworth, Yorks. John was in the 1861 census for Saddleworth, Yorks., listed as a widower, with his daughter Mary living with him.

Saddleworth is about midway between Manchester, Lancs. And Bradford, Yorks. Historically, it is part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. However, it is now a civil parish of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester, Lancashire. (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JOHN GREAVES (1) AND MARY A. ------

Edward Greaves (2) was born about 1819-1821 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. He married Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1825 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. They were in the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Saddleworth, when he was a cotton stripper and card room hand. Both their children were born in Saddleworth.

Charles Greaves (5) was born 12 Aug. 1828 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England, and died 23 Dec. 1904 in Philadelphia, PA. He married Hannah (“Anna”) Platt, daughter of Daniel (“Dan”) Platt, on 25 July 1852 in Mottram in Longendale, Cheshire, England. She was born 10 Jan. 1829 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England, and died in 1892 in Philadelphia, PA. Charles and Anna moved to the U.S. about 1857, and settled in Philadelphia, PA. They were in the 1880 census for 31^st Ward, District 8, Philadelphia, PA, page 415D. According to that census, their oldest child was born in England, and the others in PA, Charles was a dealer in machinery, Annie was a cloth burler, son Charles was a teamster, and Amelia was an operator on stockings. The 1900 census for Ward 31, Philadelphia, PA, showed Charles as a widower, with children Anna, Charles and Amelia, and granddaughter Margretta (apparently Amelia’s daughter) living with him. In the 1910 census for Ward 31, Philadelphia, PA, Charles E. Graves was then head of the household, with sisters Anna Graves, single, Emily Henry, widowed, and niece Margaret Henry. The ages of the children in the various census records are never the same. The first 2 children were born in England, and all the others in Philadelphia. (R‑1)

Sidney (or Sydney) Greaves (6) was born about 1831 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, and died after 1880 in the U.S., probably in Philadelphia, PA. He first married Susannah ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1834 in Embley, Yorkshire. They were in the 1861 census for Saddleworth, Yorks. He married second Martha E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1844 in NJ. He was in the 1861 census for Saddleworth with his first wife. He was in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Philadelphia, PA with his second wife.

Verena (“Annie” or Anna) Greaves (11) was born 28 Sept. 1855 in Philadelphia, PA, and died 9 Nov. 1947 in Perkins, OK. She married Charles William Kenworthy, son of William Kenworthy and Mary Ann Mason, in June 1886 in Randolph, IA. He was born in 1860 in Knox, Guernsey Co., OH, and died 1 April 1941 in Perkins, OK. Amelia (or Emily) Greaves (14) was born 5 Aug. 1862 in PA. She married ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Henry in Jan. 1886 in Philadelphia, PA. He died in May 1887 in Philadelphia, PA. She was a widow in 1910. This marriage was probably after her daughter was born, and it is not known for sure whether he was the father.

John Henry Greaves (16) was born 10 Dec. 1867 in Philadelphia, PA, and died before 1928 in Newport News, VA. He married Ezella ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1892. She was born in June 1871 in NC. She was probably Ezella Jolly, b.c. 1874, daughter of Monroe Jolly and Frances ‑‑‑‑‑‑, as found in the 1880 census for Williams, Columbus Co., NC. They were in the 1900 census for Newport News, VA. Arlie Kenworthy (27) was born 27 Dec. 1888 in Lyons, Burt Co., NE, and died 10 Nov. 1960 in Stillwater, OK. She married Clarence Douglas Ross, son of Benjamin Moore Ross and Callie Dale Hunter. He was born 13 Sept. 1888 in Stanberry, MO, and died 3 Oct. 1940 in Oklahoma City, OK. (R‑1)
