GENERATION 1

 

Joseph Graves (1) was born in Germany, and died in Ontario Co., NY.  He married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  It is not known whether he had brothers and sisters.  He is said to have fought in the Revolutionary War for the Colonial Army.  (R‑2)

CHILDREN OF JOSEPH GRAVES (1)

William B. Graves (2) was born 18 Nov. 1798 in Oneida Co., NY, and died in Dec. 1871 in Waterloo, Seneca Co., NY.  He married Sarah Wright.  She was born about 1794 in NY, and died in 1868 in Waterloo, Seneca Co., NY.

The 1860 census for Waterloo, Seneca Co., NY, dwelling 1053, listed William Graves, 68 (b.c. 1892), cooper, born NY, Sarah Graves, 66 (b.c. 1894), born PA, and William G. Ship, 9, born NY.  They couldn’t be found in either the 1870 or 1850 censuses.  (R‑2)

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM B. GRAVES (2) AND SARAH WRIGHT

Archibald (or Archibold) B. Graves (4) was born 31 May 1824 in Waterloo, Seneca Co., NY, and died 11 Oct. 1898 in Coldwater, Branch Co., MI.  He married Mary J. Mallon (or Malon) on 12 May 1850 in Branch Co., MI (or in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY, according to R‑2).  She was born 17 June 1829 in County Mayo, Ireland, and died 10 May 1901 in Coldwater, Branch Co., MI.  They were both buried in Oak Grove Cem., Coldwater, MI.  They moved to Branch Co., MI in 1853.  He was a manufacturer of bricks used in early Coldwater residences and downtown stores.  Their first child was born in NY, and the others in Branch Co., MI.

Archibald and Mary were in the 1850 census for Buffalo, Ward 2, Erie Co., NY, page 145, dwelling 763, with Archibald, 27, brickmaker, NY, Mary, 21, Ireland, and brother Thomas, 29, brickmaker, NY.  Just a few doors on the same page in dwelling 755 were William R. Graves, 40, Germany, and Josephine Graves, 26, Germany.  Were they related?  Archibald couldn’t be found in the 1860 census.  The 1870 census for Coldwater, Branch Co., MI, page 116, listed Archibald B., 46, brickmaker, NY, Mary, 41, Canada West, Sarah J., 18, NY, William, 16, MI, George, 14, MI, Lillie, 10, MI, and Melissa, 7, MI.  The 1880 census for Coldwater, Branch Co., MI, page 543D, listed Archibald, 56, Farmer, CT, Mary, 50, Ireland, Lillian, 20, MI, and Malissa, 17, MI, with sons George, 24, and William, 26, living next door.  None of the censuses listed Richard and Rachael as children (given by R‑2).  (R‑1, R‑2)

GENERATION 4

 

CHILDREN OF ARCHIBALD B. GRAVES (4) AND MARY J. MALLON

William J. Graves (6) was born 28 March 1854 in Coldwater, Branch Co., MI, and died 14 July 1924 in Batavia, Branch Co., MI.  He married Mariam Burghduff, daughter of Nelson Burghduff and Adaline Abbott, on 28 March 1874 in Bethel, Branch Co., MI.  He was a stone mason by trade and worked with his father in brick manufacturing.  He hauled the first load of bricks for what is now the Coldwater Community Hospital.

“He and his wife, Mariam, spent four years in South Dakota, homesteading a ranch which he later sold to his son, Clare.  Clare was a risk taker, swashbuckling type who is reputed to have made a fortune in the Black Hills of the Dakotas mining gold.  I remember him showing up in coldwater wearing gold rings, driving a Cadillac, smoking big stogies and drinking his rye while putting a cud of chewing tobacco in his mouth.  I don’t think anyone knew whether it was a show or he really did have money.”

They were in the 1880 census for Coldwater, Branch Co., MI, page 543D, with one child.  All their children were born in Batavia, MI.  (R‑1, R‑2)

George W. Graves (7) was born 15 March 1856 and died 5 June 1927, both in Coldwater, Branch Co., MI.  He married Ida E. Welden, daughter of Jacob N. Weldin and Susan Taylor, on 22 Oct. 1877 in Coldwater, MI.  She was born 5 Aug. 1854 in Branch Co., MI, and died 11 Jan. 1899 in Coldwater, Branch Co., MI.  They were both buried in Oak Grove Cem., Coldwater, MI.  At least their last 2 children were born in coldwater, MI.  (R‑1)

Melissa Graves (10) was born about 1863 in MI.  She married John M. Chadsey on 12 Oct. 1881 in Branch Co., MI.  He died 22 Dec. 1915 in Branch Co., MI.  (R‑1)

Maude Mae Graves (13) was born 22 July 1877 in Batavia, MI, and died 28 Dec. 1948 in Coldwater, Branch Co., MI, of a lung condition.  She married Arden Spencer Hill, son of George Hill and Malinda Swihart, on 23 Feb. 1897 in Bethel, MI.  She had a stroke, which left her paralyzed, and six months later she died.  (R‑2)

Lavern Graves (18) was born 8 Oct. 1888 in Coldwater, Branch Co., MI, and died 27 Jan. 1950 in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., MI.  He married Margaret Adelia (“Fern”) Lemmon, daughter of Lynn L. Lemmon and Mammie C. Whiting, on 14 Oct. 1916.  She was born 11 Dec. 1897 in Chelsea, Sylvan Twp., Washtenaw Co., MI, and died 8 Jan. 1946 in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., MI.  They were both buried in Reese Cem., Calhoun Co., MI.  (R‑1)
