DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES AND ANNIE ------ OF CANADA & IL

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

John Graves (1) was born about 1842 in Canada, probably in Quebec.  He married Annie ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1845 in NY.  Both her parents were born in Ireland.  They were in the 1870 census for Rock Falls, Whiteside Co., IL, dwelling 39, page 34, with John, 27, wheelwright, Annie, 25, and William, 1.  They were in the 1880 census for Chicago, Cook Co., IL, dwelling 127, page 569D, with John listed as 38, sawyer.  They have not been found in the 1900 census.  All their children were born in IL.

  8.   Samuel Graves, b. Oct. 1876.  In the 1900 census for Chicago, Ward 12, Cook Co., IL, page 16A, single, living in the household of his sister Annie.

  9.   Alfred Graves, b.c. 1878.

  10.  daughter, b. May 1880.

 

 

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES AND ANNIE ------

Annie Graves (2) was born in Aug. 1865 in NY.  She married William Gunnis about 1886[1].  He was born in Jan. 1862 in PA, and both his parents were born in Ireland.  They were in the 1900 census for Chicago, Ward 12, Cook Co., IL, page 16A, at 1068 Wilcox Ave., with him listed as coffee roaster.  Living in the household was Samuel Graves, brother of Annie, 23.  All their children were born in WI.

Joseph Graves (6) was born about 1874 in IL[2].  He married Hattie Reed.  She was born about 1893 in Iowa.  They were in the 1910 census for Denver, 2nd Ward, Denver Co., CO, page 125B, with Joseph E., 26, Hattie L. M., 17, and Desha (?) L., 11 months.  In 1930 he was living with his niece Edith Kersten, 30, divorced, listed as 57, divorced.  In 1910 he was city dog catcher, and in 1930 he worked as a mechanic in underground construction.  According to the birth certificate of his son Joseph, he was a barber and a miner.  Joseph and Hattie divorced sometime after 1917.  (R‑1)

  17.  Desha (?) L. Graves, b. 1909.

  18.  Joseph William Graves, b. 14 Oct. 1917[3] (Georgetown, CO), m. Hattie Reed, d. 7 July 1970 (Wilmington, CA).  He was also known as Carl Williams Graves.  After his parents divorced, his name was changed to that of his mother’s common law husband, Carl William Bergstrom, Jr.  He graduated from San Pedro High School in 1936 and, according to the yearbook, he played football 3 years, and was president of the Electrical Association.  He worked for Smale-Robinson Co. as a deep sea diver during World War II and after.
