DESCENDANTS OF ELIZABETH CATHERINE GRAVES AND WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON KELLOGG OF FAYETTE CO., KY AND OREGON

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Elizabeth Catherine Graves (1) was born about 1822 in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY, and died 4 Nov. 1905 in Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR.  According to the 1880 census, her father was born in KY and her mother in VA.  She married William Henry Harrison Kellogg, son of Solomon Kellogg and Rebecca Turner.  He was probably called Harrison[1].  He was born 25 Dec. 1812 in Sempronius, Cayuga Co., NY, and died 2 Jan. 1885 in Oregon City, OR.  According to the 1880 census, both his parents were born in CT.  Both Elizabeth and William were buried in Mt. View Cem., Oregon City, OR.

On the assumption that Fayette Co., KY is Elizabeth’s correct place of birth, the 1820 and 1830 censuses for Fayette Co. were examined.  In 1830, the only household with a daughter of the right age who could not be identified was that of Sarah Graves in Lexington, page 275, with 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 0-5, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 40-50.  The only other household with a daughter of the right age in 1830 was that of Thomas S. (Sims) Graves, and all his children are known.  In the 1820 census, the only household that seemed to match was that of Elijah Graves, page 77, with 1 male 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 0-10, and 1 female 26-45.  It is not known which genealogy this Elijah Graves is part of.

The 1850 census for New Haven, Huron Co., OH, page 189, listed Harrison Kelogg, 36, NY, blacksmith, Elizabeth C., 25, KY, Armilda, 9, KY, Rebecah, 6, KY, Artemus B., 2, OH.  The 1860 census for Lyons, Cook Co., IL, Lyonsville P.O., listed W. H. Kellogg, 40, farmer, Elizabeth, 36, Armilda, 17, Rebecca, 15, Artemus B., 12, Catharine W., 8, James H., 6, Sylvilera, 5, William S., 3, Charles, 2, Ethan E., 3/12.  The 1870 census for Platte, Andrew Co., MO, Whitesville P.O., page 324, listed Harrison Kellogg, 55, farmer, Catharine, 46, Artemus B., 21, farm laborer, Rebecca, 23, Henry, 17, farm laborer, Sylvia, 15, Solomon, 13, Edwin, 6, Harrison, 8, George, 5, Abraham L., 4.  The 1880 census for Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR, page 226A, listed William H. H. Kellog, 67, farmer, Catherine, 57, James H., 16, George, 14, Abraham L., 12, Rebekah, 26, William S., 22, farming, Ethan E., 18, farming, and Edward, 20, farmer.

The first 2 children listed below were born in KY, the next 4 in OH, the next 6 in IL, and the thirteenth one in MO.  Although Abraham L. Kellogg was listed in both the 1870 and 1880 censuses, R‑1 did not list Abraham but did list Albert Kellogg as the younest child.  (R‑1)

   3.    Rebecca Kellogg, b.c. 1844, m. Milton Stinley, 23 Dec. 1880 (Clackamas Co., OR).

   4.    Artemus B. Kellogg, b.c. 1848 (Plymouth, Richland Co., OH), m. Mary Lawson, 11 June 1871 (Newton, MO), d. before 1885.

   5.    Catherine (“Kate”) W. Kellogg, b.c. 1852.

   6.    James Henry (“Harry”) Kellogg, b.c. 1854.

   7.    Sylivera (or Sylvia Kate) Kellogg, b.c. 1855 (Plymouth, Richland Co., OH), d. MO.

   8.    William Solomon Kellogg, b.c. 1857 (Lyons, Cook Co., IL), m. Hattie A. Rider, 22 Feb. 1883 (Clackamas Co., OR).

   9.    Charles (or Edward) Kellogg, b. 29 March 1860 (IL, or Plymouth, OH), m. Etta Maria ‑‑‑‑‑‑, d. 16 Aug. 1927 (Salem, Marion Co., OR).  She was b. 17 Aug. 1862 in Eola, OR, and d. 1948.  Although the 1880 census lists both Edward and Ethan E., it is possible that is an error and Ethan E. is really Ethan Edward Kellogg.

   10.  Ethan E. Kellogg, b. 1860.

+11.  Joseph Harrison Kellogg, b.c. 1862, m. Orlena Stingley, 22 Sept. 1885, d. 13 Feb. 1929.

   12.  Edwin Kellogg, b.c. 1864.

   13.  George W. Kellogg, b.c. 1865 (Lyons, Cook Co., IL).

   14.  Abraham L. Kellogg, b.c. 1867.

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH C. GRAVES (1) AND WILLIAM H. H. KELLOGG

Joseph Harrison Kellogg (11) was born about 1862 in IL or in Plymouth, Richland Co., OH, and died 13 Feb. 1929.  He married Orlena (“Lena”) Stingley on 22 Sept. 1885 in Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR.  She was born about 1866 in MO, and died in 1964.  They were both buried in Mt. View Cem., Oregon City, OR.  All their children were born in OR.  (R‑1)

   16.  Nettie Shannon Kellogg, b.c. 1886, d. 1953.

   17.  Guy Kellogg, b.c. 1883 (Oregon City, Clackamas Co., OR), m. Grace Belle Jenney, 12 Feb. 1907, d. 17 Dec. 1961 (Lane, OR).  She was b. 12 June 1885 in Greenwich, Huron Co., OH.

   18.  Fennia W. Kellogg, b. Sept. 1886.

 

Albert (“Bert”) Kellogg (15) was born 10 Feb. 1869 in Whiteville, Andrew Co., MO, died 6 June 1934 in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR, and was buried in Riverview Cem., Portland, OR.  He first married Edna Evaline Moore on 26 Nov. 1885 in Albany, Linn Co., OR.  She was born about 1871 in Eldora, Hardin Co., IA, and died 14 Sept. 1895 in Albany, Linn Co., OR.  He married second Emily Holman on 5 Nov. 1899 in Portland, OR.  She was born about 1875 in Portland, OR.  The first child of Bert and Edna was born in Buena Vista, Polk Co., OR, and the other 3 in Albany, Linn Co., OR.  (R‑1)

+19.  Lavina Pearl Kellogg, b. 14 March 1887, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Mason, d. before 1946.

   20.  Bert Wendell Herman Kellogg, b. 28 Jan. 1895, m. Lila Myrtle Blan, 1919, d. March 1967 (Fort Smith, AR).  She was b. 1897 and d. 1988.  He may have been adopted by a family named Berdan or otherwise changed his surname to Berdan.

   21.  Jessie Marie Kellogg, b. 6 April 1891, m. Dudley Mattson, 25 March 1909 (Goldendale, Klickitat Co., WA), d. 23 Feb. 1985 (Vancouver, Clark Co., WA).  He was b. 14 April 1888 in Centerville, Klickitat Co., WA, and d. 17 Feb. 1952 in Vancouver, Clark Co., WA.

+22.  Fred Raymond Kellogg, b. 1892, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, d.c. 1926.

 

 

GENERATION 3

 

CHILDREN OF ALBERT KELLOGG (15) AND EDNA E. MOORE

Lavina Pearl Kellogg (19) was born 14 March 1887 in Buena Vista, Polk Co., OR, and died before 1946.  She apparently married ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Mason.  (R‑1)

Children – Mason

   23.  Jessie Mason, b. 22 April 1908, m. Russel Dry, d. Jan. 1976 (Twisp, Okanogan Co., WA).  He was b. 14 Aug. 1901, and d. April 1971 in Twisp, WA.

   24.  Berneice Mason, died at age 3 in eastern OR.

 

Fred Raymond Kellogg (22) was born in 1892 in Albany, Linn Co., OR, and died about 1926.  He married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  (R‑1)

   25.  Lloyd Kellogg, b. 7 June 1917 (Amity, OR), m. Dorothy ‑‑‑‑‑‑, d. 26 Nov. 1991 (Portland, Multnomah Co., OR).  She d. 1983.

[1] Both the 1850 and 1870 censuses showed his name as Harrison.  It seems likely that this was the name he generally went by, and he used William for more formal, legal situations.
