DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GREVE AND JOHANNA ------ OF PRUSSIA AND GALVESTON, TX

GENERATION 1

William Greve (1) was born about 1833 in Prussia, and apparently died between 1870 and 1880. He married Johanna ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1837 in Prussia, and died 8 Sept. 1900. They were in the 1870 census for Ward 1, Galveston Co., TX, page 127. She was in the 1880 census for Galveston, TX, page 222C, with all their children, all born in TX. He was a drayman in 1870. Johanna was also in the 1900 census for Ward 12, Galveston, TX, page 9A, as a widow, with children Louise and William living with her.

On Sept. 8, 1900, Galveston was hit by a ferocious storm and accompanying tidal wave that killed more than 6,000 residents and nearly flattened the city. This was the worst weather-related natural disaster that America ever suffered in terms of lives lost. Among the dead were Johanna, her daughter Louise, Alvina (wife of her son Edward), and Edward’s daughters Gertrude and Eveline.

3. Johanna Greve, b. Aug. 1866, m. Charles G. Menilborn (uncertain spelling), c. 1890. They were in the 1900 census for Ward 7, Galveston, Galveston Co., TX, page 8A, but could not be found in later censuses.

+4. Edward W. Greve, b. May 1869, m(1) Alvina ‑‑‑‑‑‑, m(2) Cecile ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1903.

5. Louise (or Louisa or Lulu) Greve, b. March 1872, d. 8 Sept. 1900.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GREVE (1) AND JOHANNA ------

Edward W. Greve (4) was born in May 1869 in TX. He first married Alvina ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born in Dec. 1871 in Germany, and died 8 Sept. 1900 in the Galveston flood. He married second Cecile (or Cecilia) ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1903. She was born about 1878 in TX. Her father was born in Germany and her mother in LA. He was in the 1900 through 1930 censuses for Ward 12, Galveston, Galveston Co., TX, at 1218 Ave. L in 1910 through 1930.

William H. Greve (6) was born in Dec. 1874 in TX. He married Ella Reagan, daughter of Patrick Reagan, about 1902. She was born about 1881 in NY. They were in the 1920 census for Ward 12, Galveston, Galveston Co., TX, page 7B, with her father, age 74, widower, born in Ireland, living with them. They were in the 1930 census for Galveston, TX, page 9A, with both children still at home, and her father still in the household. William was a ship carpenter in 1930.

Edward William Greve (12) was born about 1909 in TX. He married Dorothy Lillian Barnes about 1927. She was born about 1908 in TX. They were in the 1930 census for Galveston, Galveston Co., TX, page 2B. He was a plumbing apprentice in 1930. (R‑1)
