DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES AND NARNETTA BURGESS OF NC & GILES CO., TN

GENERATION 1

John Graves (1) was born about 1805 in NC, and died after 1880.  He married Narnetta Burgess, called Nettie.  She was born about 1820 in TN.  They were in the 1850 census for District 3, Giles Co., TN, page 320, with their first 7 children, all born in TN.  They were in the 1860 census for Southern Subdivision, Giles Co., TN, Oakflat P.O., page 160, with their last 8 children (all except Nathaniel and William), all born in TN.  They were in the 1870 census for Dist. 3, Giles Co., TN, with 7 children, but a couple of the names and dates didn’t agree with other records.  John was in the 1880 census for District 3, Giles Co., TN, page 53A, with Stive, 28, Abbot, 25, Mary A., 30, and Martha J., 28.  Living nearby in 1880 were the families of William T. Graves and Romulus S. Graves.  The names of John’s wife, and especially his children, varied from census to census, so there is some uncertainty about their names.

William T. Graves was probably a son of James L. D. Graves, born about 1822 in NC.  (The ancestry of James L. D. Graves is not presently known, but he married Frances Caroline Kimbrough, daughter of John Marmaduke Kimbrough and Nancy M. Turner, in 1878 in Giles Co., TN.  Frances and her father John were descendants of genealogy 270.)  James may have been a younger brother of John Graves, so William T. Graves was probably John’s nephew.  There was also a Thomas K. Graves, born about 1793 in NC, with wife Nancy, who was in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses for Giles Co., TN; however, he was a son of David Graves and Nancy Hunt of genealogy 169.

DNA testing of the Y-chromosome of descendants has shown that John Graves was descended from genealogy 270.  It is possible that John was the one who was a son of Thomas Graves and Elizabeth Lanier in that genealogy, but the assertion that the John Graves who was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth died in 1840 makes that questionable.  However, many of the descendants of Thomas and Elizabeth did live in Giles Co., TN, so this connection or a similar one does seem likely.  (R‑2)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES (1) AND NARNETTA BURGESS

Nathaniel Thomas Basil Graves (2) was born 17 Dec. 1836[1] and died 26 Jan. 1907, both in Giles Co., TN.  He married Melvina (“Vina”) (Rogers) Lanier on 5 March 1894 in Giles Co., TN.  She was born 18 May 1855 in TN (or Tuscaloosa, AL), and died 22 Jan. 1933 in Giles Co., TN.  She first married James W. L. Lanier, son of Alexander Lanier and Mary Edwards, on 25 Jan. 1873 in Giles Co., TN.  He was born about 1854 in Giles Co., TN.  They had 3 children, James William Lanier, b. 3 Dec. 1874, Otis Lanier, b. 4 Jan. 1879, and Mattie Lanier, b. 20 March 1885, all in Giles Co. She next married William Brown, born about 1855 in TN, on 3 Nov. 1887 in Giles Co., and had son Willie Brown, born 2 Oct. 1888 in Giles Co., TN, died 2 Jan. 1967 in Los Angeles, CA.  At some point she also married ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Webb and had son Haden Webb.

According to Nathaniel’s pension application, he was a Confederate soldier and engaged in several battles.  He enlisted in June 1861 in the 32nd TN Regiment.  He was in prison at Camp Morton for 7 months.  He was later injured in a train wreck near Gallatin, TN.  His legs were crushed but he never lost them.  After the war, he cut wood for whiskey barrels for Jack Daniels.  The family was in the 1900 census for District 3, Giles Co., TN, when he was listed as a farmer. She stated that all 6 of her 6 children were living.

She was in the 1910 census for Giles Co., TN, widowed, with her son Raymond, and 5 of her 6 children still living.  At least one researcher reported that she had a second son with Nathaniel, Keamon Graves, born 1907, but that is not correct; the son in the 1910 census whose name was misread as Keamon was Raymond, and he was clearly born about 1897, not 1907.  (R‑2, R‑5)
