GENERATION 1

James W. Graves (1) was born about 1838 in OH. He married Nancy E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1842 in OH. They were in the 1860 census for Hamilton, Franklin Co., OH, the 1870 census for Lewis, Clay Co., IN, and the 1880 census for Hamilton, Decatur Co., IA. He was a farmer. Their first child was born in OH, the next 2 in IN, and the others in IA.

He may have been the James Graves, age 12, in the 1850 census for Harrison, Vinton Co., OH, with parents James Graves, 32, and Mary, 32, both born in VA. Vinton Co. is only about 30-40 miles from Franklin Co.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JAMES W. GRAVES (1) AND NANCY E. ------

Charles Emmett Graves (7) was born about 1877 in IA. He married Mary J. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1898 She was born about 1876 in IA. They were in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Hamilton, Decatur Co., IA, and in the 1930 census for Fayette, Decatur Co., IA. The 1910 census showed that they had been married 12 years and had 6 children, with 5 living. In the 1930 census, he was listed as Emmett C., and his son Dale was listed as Ovid D. He was a farmer. All their children were born in IA.
