DESCENDANTS OF JONATHAN GREAVES AND SUSANNA ------ OF ACCRINGTON AND MANCHESTER, LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Jonathan Greaves (1) was born about 1800 in Accrington, Lancashire, England.  He married Susanna ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1800 in Garstang, Lancashire.  They were in the 1841 census for Manchester, Lancs, and in the 1851 census for Old Accrington, Lancs, with daughter Sarah and grandsons Wallace and George in their household.  In 1841 he was a block cutter, and a roller coverer in 1851.  Both their children were born in Accrington, Lancashire.

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF JONATHAN GREAVES (1) AND SUSANNA ------

George Greaves (2) was born about 1820 in Accrington, Lancashire.  He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1823 in Croston, Lancashire.  They were in the 1851 census for Whalley, Lancashire, 97 Bank St., when he was a currier employing 11 men, with no children living with them (they were with their grandparents).  They were in the 1861 census for Salford, Lancashire, 59 Regent Rd., and he was a manufacturing chemist.

  5.   George H. Greaves, b.c. 1848 (Rochdale or Castleton, Lancs).

  6.   Sarah A. Greaves, b.c. 1852 (Burnley, Lancs).

  7.   James H. Greaves, b. 1853 (Burnley, Lancs), m. Matilda ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was b.c. 1859 in Dukinfield, Cheshire.  They were in the 1891 census for Dukinfield, and his occupation was listed as tool, boiler, and drysalter.

  8.   William C. Greaves, b.c. 1854 (Burnley, Lancs).

+9.   Joseph A. Greaves, b.c. 1857, m. Emma G. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.

  10.  Elizabeth S. (or J.) Greaves, b.c. 1861 (Salford, Lancs).

 

 

GENERATION 3

 

CHILDREN OF GEORGE GREAVES (2) AND ELIZABETH ------

Wallace McG. Greaves (4) was born about 1846 in Rochdale[1], Lancashire.  He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑, probably about 1869.  She was born about 1841 in Blackburn, Lancashire.   She must have been a widow, since the 1871 census showed one step-daughter, Maud Mary Critchley, 5, born in Blackburn, living with them. They were in the 1871 census for Blackburn, Lancashire.  They were in the 1881 census at 199 Upper Brook St., and in the 1891 census at 40 Dover St., both in Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire.  He was listed as a drysalter in 1871 in 1881.  (A drysalter is someone who sells dried or salted foods and other goods, and chemicals, especially those used in pickling, slating and preserving.)  In 1891, he was listed as an engineer and furnace maker, and she was listed as a hotel and pub proprietor.  His first 3 children were born in Blackburn, and the twins in Gorton or Reddish, Lancashire.

Joseph A. Greaves (9) was born about 1857 in Salford, Lancashire.  He married Emma G. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1851 in Leicester, Leicestershire.  She had a pparently been married before to a Mr. Roberts, since the 1891 census for St. Margaret, Leicestershire, 12 Sherrard Rd., listed them with 4 step-children (George, Eliza, Emma and Flora Roberts), and Joseph’s 3 children.  His first son was born in Widnes, Lancashire, and the next two in Leicester.

GENERATION 4

Wallace Joseph Greaves (13) was born about 1874 in Blackburn, Lancashire.  He married Jane Irving.  (R‑1)

  20.  Jean G. Greaves, b. 1914, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Carnague.
