GENERATION 1

Jacob Banner Graves (1) was born in May 1842 in PA, and died in PA, probably before 1910. He first married Mary Jane Sweigard. She was born about 1847 and died in 1873. He married second Elizabeth Puterbaugh about 1884. She was born in Nov. 1846 in PA.

He was in the 1850 census for Montgomery, Franklin Co., PA, listed as Jacob B. Graves, 8, with his mother, Mary, 48. He was in the 1860 census for Montgomery, Franklin Co., PA, as Banner Graves, 18, laborer, with his mother, Mary, 58. He was in the 1870 census for Montgomery, Franklin Co., PA, as Banner Graves, 28, fruit gardener, his mother Mary, 68, his wife Mary, 23, and two children Harry, 3, and Clara,1. He was in the 1880 census for Montgomery, Franklin Co., PA, with no wife and 5 children. He was in the 1900 census for Montgomery, Franklin Co., PA, 58, farmer, with wife Elizabeth, and 2 children. Two of their 4 children were still living. All his children were born in PA.

It is very likely that this family is related to Samuel Graves of Monmouth Co., NJ & Bedford Co., PA (genealogy 212). (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF JACOB B. GRAVES (1)

Harry Graves (2) was born about 1867 in PA, and probably died about 1904, possibly in Indian Territory. He married Eliza Fredonia Dunnaway, daughter of James Dunnaway and Emma Stevens. She was born 4 June 1883 in TX, and died 20 Jan. 1933 in Carter, Beckham Co., OK. After he died, his widow married his brother Richard, and they raised the two surviving children. (R‑1)

They were in the 1920 census for Galveston, Ward 11, Galveston Co., TX, with 4 children. He was a watchman and she was proprietor of a day nursery. All their children were born in TX. (R‑1)

McClellan (“Mack”) Graves (4) was born 22 Aug. 1871 in Hagerstown, PA (now MD), and died 23 Dec. 1939 in Fresno, CA. He married Maud Grievel Fox about 1899. She was born 11 Aug. 1881 in NC, and died 23 Dec. 1919 in Carter, Beckham Co., OK. They were both buried in Poarch Cem., Beckham Co., OK.

They were in the 1910 census for Poarch Twp., Beckham Co., OK, and 3 of their 5 children were still living. He was in the 1920 census for Poarch Twp., Beckham Co., OK, living on North Broadway. He was a drayman and his 2 oldest sons were farm laborers. He was in the 1930 census for Englewood, Clark Co., KS, in the household of the father-in-law of his daughter Gladys, along with Gladys’s family, and his unmarried children Ralph, Helen and Leon. All his children were born in Carter, Beckham Co., OK. (R‑1)

Richard (“Dick”) Graves (6) was born 19 May 1873 in PA, and died in Jan. 1968. He married Eliza Fredonia Dunnaway on 30 Nov. 1905. She was born about 1883 in TX. She had first married his older brother Harry. The two surviving children of that marriage were raised in their home. They were in the 1910 census for Poarch, Beckham Co., OK, and the 1920 census for North Fork, Beckham Co., OK. He was a farmer. All their children were born in Carter, Beckham Co., OK. (R‑1)

James Milford (or Millard) Graves (11) was born 20 Nov. 1903 in OK, and died 2 Dec. 1981. He married Edna E. Ward, daughter of James Ward and Lois O. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, about 1923. She was born about 1905 in OK. In the 1910 census, in the household of his parents in Poarch, Beckham Co., OK, he was listed as Millard J. Graves. They were in the 1930 census for Englewood, Clark Co., KS, living with Edna’s widowed mother. He was a laborer on a steam railway in 1930. Their first 4 children were born in KS, and the last one in OK. (R‑1)

He was born 3 Sept. 1903 in Concord, TX, and died 2 Sept. 1967 in Fresno, CA. They were in the 1930 census for Carter, Beckham Co., OK, when he was a gasoline station salesman. All their children were born in Carter, OK, except for the last one born in Fresno, CA. (R‑1)

She married John Valentine Martin, son of Louis Joseph Martin and Marguerite Agnes Conboy, on 30 Oct. 1945. He was born 14 Feb. 1906 and died 31 May 1999, both in TX. (R‑1)
