DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH GREAVES AND GRACE HARGREAVES OF RAWDON, LEEDS, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

Joseph Greaves (1) was born about 1799 in Rawdon, Leeds, Yorkshire, and died about June 1882. He married Grace Hargreaves, daughter of Thomas Hargreaves and Nanny ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born 28 Dec. 1798 in Calverley, and was baptized 20 Jan. 1799 in Calverley Parish Church, Yorkshire. It appears that all their children were born in Rawdon, Leeds.

It is very likely that Joseph was a son of Joshua Greaves and Ann Hopwood (genealogy 33), but the connection has not yet been proven.

Joseph and Grace were in the 1841 census for Rawdon, Yorshire, with his occupation as clothier, and all children listed in age order, with a Samuel Greaves, 23, clothier, at the end. Samuel may have been at the end because he was considered grown, or it is possible that he was the Samuel who was a son of Joshua Greaves, the probable father of Joseph. Joseph and Grace were in the 1851 census for Horsforth, Yorkshire, with him as cloth manufacturer.

One interesting thing is that living next to Joseph in the 1841 census were the families of William Greaves, 55 (b.c. 1786), and wife Mary, and John Greaves, 60 (b.c. 1781), and wife Elizabeth. Who were these men? If they were his brothers or if John was his father, then Joshua Greaves could not have been his father. (R‑1)

John Greaves (5) was born about 1825 in Rawdon, Leeds, Yorkshire, was baptized 20 Oct. 1825 in Buckstone Baptist Chapel, Rawdon, and died 5 June 1861 in Horsforth, Leeds, Yorkshire. He married Martha ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1824 in Yeadon, died 16 Aug. 1857 in Horsforth, Leeds, and was buried at Zion Calvinistic Baptist Chapel, Horsforth, all in Yorkshire. All their children were born in Horsforth, Leeds, Yorkshire. (R‑1)

Hannah Greaves (6) was born about 1826. She married William Pickles in 1855 in St. Peter’s Church, Leeds. He was born in 1830 in Leeds. Both their children were born in Leeds, Yorkshire. (R‑1)

Martha Ann Greaves (9) was born 6 May 1832 and was baptized in 1832 in Buckstone Baptist Chapel, both in Rawdon, Leeds, Yorkshire. She married Thomas T. Lister in 1857 in St. Wilfrid, Calverley, Leeds. He was born about 1828 in Rodley, Leeds. All their children were born in Claverley. (R‑1)

William Henry Greaves (10) was born about 1834 and was baptized 1 April 1834 in Buckstone Baptist Chapel, both in Rawdon, Leeds, Yorkshire. He married Martha Roo, daughter of Joseph Roo and Maria Smith, on 17 Sept. 1855 in Hunslet Registry Office. She was born about 1832, died 15 Aug. 1873, and was buried in Aug. 1873 at Cragg Hill Baptist Church, all in Horsforth, Leeds, Yorkshire.

They were in the 1861 census for Golden Bank, Horsforth, Guiseley, Yorkshire, with his widowed mother-in-law Maria Roo, 58, living with them. They were in the 1871 census for 5 Parkside, Horsforth, Yorkshire, when he was a cloth manufacturer. He was in the 1891 census for Bradford, Yorkshire, widower, with his widower son Joseph living with him.. Their children were all born in Horsforth. (R‑1)

Martha d. 23 May 1887. Florence d. 27 Feb. 1945. Joseph and Hannah were in the 1901 census for Bradford Yorkshire, at 52 Boldshay St. He was a blacksmith’s striker and she was a worsted weaver.

Eliza Greaves (11) was born about 1837 and was baptized in 1837 in Buckstone Baptist Chapel, both in Rawdon, Leeds, Yorkshire. She married Abraham Grimshaw in 1856 in Otley District Registered Building. He was born about 1835 in Rawdon. Their first 2 children were born in Horsforth and the others in Rawdon, Yorkshire. (R‑1)

Joseph Greaves (14) was born about 1849 in Horsforth, Yorkshire. He married Eliza ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1847 in Cokington, Lincolnshire. They were in the 1871 census for Horsforth, at 39 Turkey Street, when he was an engine cleaner.

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM H. GREAVES (10) AND MARTHA ROO

Edwin Greaves (25) was born about 1856 in Horsforth, Yorkshire, and died 9 Jan. 1931. He first married Sarah Elizabeth Shires on 6 Feb. 1881. She was born about 1856 in Rawdon, Leeds, Yorkshire, and died after the 1901 census. He married second Annie Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1901. She died 13 Aug. 1939. Edwin and Sarah were in the 1881 census for Rooks Lane, Tong, Yorkshire, the 1891 census for 7 Kitson St., Idle, Yorkshire, and in the 1901 census for 57 Grange Terrace, Shipley, Yorkshire. (R‑1)

43. Allan W. Greaves, b.c. 1888 (Windhill or Shipley, Yorkshire).

Charles Henry Greaves (26) was born 19 Feb. 1858 in Horsforth, Leeds, Yorkshire, and died 25 Jan. 1945 at 4 Victoria Mount, Leeds. He married Annie Gill, daughter of James Gill and Anne Wade, on 26 Dec. 1882 in Kippax Parish Church. She was born about 1857, and died 15 Aug. 1932 at 4 Victoria Mount, Leeds. They were in the 1891 census for 5 Rosebank Terrace, Leeds, when he was a tailor’s cutter. All their children were born in Leeds, Clara at 3 Rillbank Place, and Annie and Alice at 4 Rosebank Terrace. Sarah Ellen Greaves (29) was born 5 Aug. 1864 in Horsforth, Yorkshire, and died 17 April 1944. She married Tom Laycock on 1 Feb. 1890. He was born about 1863 in Eccleshill, Yorkshire. They were in the 1901 census for 118 Harrogate Rd., Eccleshill, Bradford, Yorkshire, with son George, and he was a wool loom minder and she was a wool drawer in a worsted mill. (R‑1)

Annie Maria Greaves (30) was born 24 July 1866 in Horsforth, Leeds, Yorkshire, and died 18 July 1911 in Bradford, Yorkshire. She married William Edward Robinson, son of Thomas Robinson and Hannah Holmes, on 28 June 1885 in Bradford Parish Church. He was born about 1860 in Bowling, Bradford, Yorkshire, and died 24 Jan. 1940. (R‑1)
