DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GRIEVE AND ELEANOR TURNBULL OF NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND & YORK CO., NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA

GENERATION 1

William Grieve (1) was born 5 Feb 1799 in Wooler, Northumberland, England Christen in Earsdon, by North Shields, and died about 1875 in Harvey, York Co., New Brunswick, Canada. (R‑2 said he died after 11 March 1875 in Manner-Sutton, New Brunswick.)

William Grieve, a shepherd, his wife Eleanor, and children, John, 15; Patrick, 13; William, 11; George, 9; Alice, 8; Henry, 6; and Margaret, 3 came to New Brunswick on the brig Cornelius of Sunderland in 1837 with the pioneer settlers of Harvey Settlement. A daughter, Eleanor was born on the voyage and died in Fredericton in infancy.

William arrived with only 7s 6d in his pocket, and chose to begin work immediately on his lot at Harvey.

William hired himself out to Colonel Shore at Fredericton at £30 per year for a number of years before settling on his land in Harvey Settlement. He paid his neighbours to clear his land for him, bringing some much needed cash into the settlement. After seven years his family took up residence, building a frame house immediately, “without the previous erection of a log-house”. By 1850 he owned 700 acres and had clearings of 20 acres on each of three or four lots, “intended for his several sons”.

A passage from James F.W. Johnston’s 1851 Notes on North America: Agricultural, Economical, and Social (Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1851), Vol. II, 168-78; CIHM no. 35750, provides a candid window on William Grieve’s homesteading experience:

“I conversed with two of the settlers as to their own history and progress.

Mr. Grieves was a shepherd at Whittingham, on the Border. He landed at Fredericton, in 1837, with a family often, and with only 7s. 6d. in his pocket. He did not come out immediately to Harvey along with the other settlers, but having received his grant of land, he hired himself as a farm-servant to Colonel Shore at Fredericton, at £30 a-year; and such of his children as could do anything he hired out also. Supporting the rest of his family out of his earnings, he saved what he could; and whenever he had a pound or two to spare, he got an acre or two of his land cleared. In this way he did good to the other settlers, by bringing some money among them and giving a little employment. At last, four years ago (that was, after seven years' service) he came out, and settled on his land himself: building a good house for his family right away-that is, without the previous erection of a log-house, as is usually the case; and a very good house he appeared to have. He now owns seven hundred acres of land in different lots, and has clearings of twenty acres on each of three or four of these farm-lots, intended for his several sons, who appear to be as industrious as himself.

When I asked him how it was that he appeared to have got on better than the rest of those around him, he said, "he and his family had saved it off their backs and their belly." But he added -and it really moved me to find here lingering some heart and gratefulness still for kindness conferred, among so many who are filled only with grumbling and discontent-"Few have had so good a chance as I had, sir, or have met with so kind a master." I afterwards had the pleasure of meeting that master at Fredericton, and found him as grateful for the warm attachment and zealous service of so good a hind. I can well fancy a canny Northumbrian shepherd, with his thriftily brought up, obedient, and respectful children, gaining friends in New Brunswick, and thriving as Grieves has done. "Had I my life to begin again," he said, "I would come out here; for though I might not have more comfort myself, there is the satisfaction of providing well for my family."

Elenor Grieve, age 66; 23rd Nov., Joseph Grieve, age 21; 25th same month, Patrick Turnbull Grieve, age 36; 9th Dec., William Grieve, age 35. The above are the wife and children of William Grieve of Harvey.

It is believed that William is buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery; however his name is not on the gravestone.

He married Eleanor Turnbull, daughter of Patrick Turnbull and Alice, 9 Jun 1821 in the parish of Ingram, Northumberland, England, in the presence of John Grieve, George Gibson, Margaret Taylor and Mary Taylor. She was born 18 Sep 1794 in Northumberland, England, was christened 21 Sep 1794 in Harbottle, Northumberland, England, died 18 Oct 1860 in Harvey, and was buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. (R‑1)

John Grieve (2) was born 16 May 1822 in Peels, Northumberland, England, and died 14 Dec 1859 in St. Louis, MO.

Married Monday 4th inst., by Rev. John Allison, at residence of R. A. Hay, John Grieve, Saint Louis, U.S. and Miss Margaret J. Cunliffe, Woodstock, Carleton Co.

From Carleton Sentinel, 21 Jan 1860:

Died St. Louis, Mo., 14 Dec 1859, of consumption, John eldest son of Wm Grieve, Esq., of Harvey Settlement, York Co., age 38, formerly a resident of Woodstock, Carleton Co.

John lived in Woodstock, NB, prior to going to St. Louis, where he died. While the Carleton Sentinel gives the cause of death being consumption, folklore tells us he died of typhus.

He married Margaret Jane Cunliffe, daughter of Nicholas Cunliffe & Margaret Gates, 4 Aug 1851 in Woodstock, NB. She was born 1826 in Woodstock, NB, christened 23 Jul 1826 in Anglican Church, Woodstock, NB, died 19 Nov 1867 (place unknown). They were both buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. (R‑1)

He married Mary Piercy, daughter of George Piercy & Ann Winter, 1 Jul 1851 in St. Paul's Church, Fredericton, By Rev. Dr. John M. Brooke. Born 8 May 1831 in Wark Common, Northumberland, England. Died 12 Aug 1916 in Harvey Station, NB. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Religion Presbyterian.

Patrick and Mary's youngest child was born three months after Patrick died, leaving Mary to raise seven young children on her own. (R‑1)

He married Rachel Lawrence, daughter of Isaac Lawrence & Hannah Burtt, 30 Dec 1852 in St. Paul's Church, Fredericton By Rev. Dr. John M. Brooke. Born 26 Aug 1832 in Kingsclear Parish, NB. Died After 1879.

When William died, Rachel was left with three young sons, the older two died within a short time of their father, and youngest son John was 11 years old in the 1871 Census for the Parish of Kingsclear. (R‑1)

George Grieve (5) was born 9 Apr 1827 in Selbyscove, England, died 8 May 1909 in Courtenay area, BC, Canada, and was buried in Courtenay Civic Cemetery, Section A. Occupation Farmer.

From St. Stephen Banner, 24 Mar 1854: "Married Harvey Settlement, 6th inst., by Rev. Millen, George Grieve and Jane, fourth daughter of John Nesbit."

PANB #F15552, p. 141: George Grieve to Jane Nesbit both of Kingsclear on 6 Mar 1854 by William Millan, Presbyterian minister. Witnesses William Grieve and Matthew Chambers.

George and his wife Jane and their children moved to Vancouver Island in 1875 and settled in the Comox Valley area, and they were successful farmers, and builders. He disappeared one day in May 1909 while looking for something in the woods. George's name is on a gravestone in cemetery in Courtenay, but his body was never found.

He married Jane Nesbitt, daughter of John Nesbitt & Ann, 6 Mar 1854 in York Co., NB By William Millen . Born 9 Jun 1828 in Newcastle, England. Died 5 Feb 1918 in Sandwick, BC. Buried in Courtenay Civic Cemetery, Section A. (R‑1)

She married Isaac Burrell, son of Isaac Burrell & Jane, Approx 1854. Born 24 Mar 1829 in Northumberland, England. Died 2 May 1913 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer.

Isaac Burrell was married first to Alice Grieve, who died 26 Sep 1860, and they had three children: Joselean, Jane and William. Isaac married secondly Elizabeth Nesbitt Berkeley, and they had two children: Annie and Thomas.

In York Co NB Marriage Register C 1850-1866 (PANB), Isaac's surname is written as "Bunnell", and Elizabeth's surname is written as "Birkley".

In 1861 Census for Manners Sutton, York Co., NB, Isaac Burrell was 32 years old, English, Farmer, Presbyterian; wife Elizabeth was 36 years old, English, Presbyterian; Joselen, 6, Jane, 4, William Isaac, 1, all born in NB; and Elizabeth Berkeley, 12, English and John Berkeley, 8, English (children of Elizabeth).

In the 1861 Census, the Isaac Burrell family owned or occupied 45 acres improved and 65 acres unimproved land. Cash value of farm, 150 pounds, value of implements and machinery, 8 pounds. They had 2 horses, 4 milch cows, 5 other neat cattle, 8 sheep, 2 swine, and slaughtered 250 lb. pork. Produced 100 lb. butter; 25 lb. wool; 9 tons hay; 150 bu. oats; 40 bu. buckwheat; 5 bu. peas, 25 bu. timothy, 100 bu. turnips, and 100 bu. potatoes.

From Obituary (d. 2 May 1913, 85 yr 2 mo.): Death at Tweedside. The death of Isaac Burrell occurred at Tweedside, York County, on Friday evening after a short illness.

He was in the 86th year of his age and had been in fairly good health until about a week ago. The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs Alex Swan, of Tweedside, one step-daughter, Mrs William Atchinson, of Houlton, and one son, Thomas Burrell of Tweedside. The funeral took place yesterday and was largely attended. Rev. M. J. Macpherson conducted the services and interment was made at Tweedside. (sic. Harvey Settlement Cemetery/jh). (R‑1)

He married Margaret Speedy, daughter of Thomas Speedy & Isabella Patterson, 6 Feb 1861 in St. Pauls Church, Fredericton By Rev. Dr. John M. Brooke. Born 17 Oct 1840 in England. Died 7 Mar 1923 in Nanaimo, BC.

Henry went to BC with his family and with the family of her brother George in 1875, and settled on Vancouver Island. Henry and his wife Margaret had twelve children, with the first seven born in Harvey, NB.

After the death of Henry Grieve, Margaret married 1 Jun 1898, William Smith Birkett, who was born 3 Nov 1846 and immigrated to Canada from England in 1872. W. S. Birkett died 14 Jan 1915, age 68, at Nanaimo, BC.

Margaret Grieve(9) was born 19 Nov 1834 in Collingwood House, England, was baptized 26 Nov 1834 in Branton, Northumberland, England, and probably died in Sandwick, BC, Canada after 1907.

She married John ("Jack") Cessford, son of David Cessford & Margaret ("Peggy") Piercy. He was born 27 Sep 1834 in Wooler, England, was baptized 5 Oct 1834 in United Presbyterian Church, Cheviot St., Wooler, died 25 Nov 1907 in Harvey, York Co., NB, and was buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer. Religion Presbyterian.

Jack and Margaret were farmers in Harvey. Jack is buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery, but Margaret's name is not on the gravestone. She may have moved to British Columbia after Jack died. There is a picture taken in BC of Margaret with one of her brothers who lived in BC. Also three of their sons moved to BC.

In the 1861 census they owned or occupied 25 acres improved land and 55 acres unimproved land, cash value of farm was 100 pounds, value of implements and machinery, 2 pounds. They had 2 horses, 2 milch cows, 1 other neat cattle, 4 sheep, 2 swine; produced 150 lb. butter, 12 lb. wool, 5 tons hay, 250 bu. oats, 20 bu. buckwheat and 80 bu. potatoes. (R‑1)

He married Harriett Pass, daughter of William Pass and Charlotte Coburn, on 24 Sept. 1879 in Harvey, York Co., NB. She was born 15 July 1860 in Harvey, NB, and died 7 June 1935 in Vancouver, BC. Their first child was born in Nanaimo, the next 5 in Harvey, and the last 3 in Union, Cumberland, all in BC, Canada. (R‑2)

William Lewis Grieve (51) was born 12 Feb. 1891 in Nanaimo, BC, Canada, and died 7 Jan. 1957 in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR. He married Lula Leigh Brown, daughter of James Brown and Netta May Manzer, on 18 Sept. 1913 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was born 25 April 1892 in St. John, NB, Canada, and died 18 Oct. 1967 in Portland, OR. All their children were born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. (R‑2)
