GENERATION 1

 

John Greaves (1) may have been born about 1730.  He lived in Sutton Cum Lound[1] (near East Retford), Nottinghamshire.  He married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF JOHN GREAVES (1)

Richard Greaves (2) was baptized 2 Jan. 1757 in Sutton Cum Lound, Nottinghamshire.  He married Martha Upton on 25 Nov. 1779 in Sutton Cum Lound.  All their children were baptized in Sutton Cum Lound.  In the 1841 census for Sutton, there was a Richard Greaves, 85, living with the family of Thomas and Sarah Malkin, both 45.  This Richard Greaves was still living with Thomas and Sarah Malkin in Sutton in 1851, age 94.  He was probably the one who married Martha, and it is possible that Sarah was another daughter of his.  There were a number of other Greaves families living in Sutton in 1841 who may have been close relatives of Richard.  (R‑1)

   7.  John Greaves, bapt. 3 Dec. 1791.  He may be the one in the 1841 census for Sutton, b.c. 1796.  He is probably the one, b.c. 1792, widower and farmer, who was in the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Sutton, with relatives George and Ann Taylor living with him.  In 1861, nephews John Hewson, 31, and John O. Tayor, 11, were also living with him.  There is a possibility that he was the same as John Graves, b.c. 1791, of Scrooby, Notts. (gen. 396), but that seems unlikely.

   8.  Vincent Greaves, bapt. 9 April 1797, m. Ann Boulton, 31 Dec. 1816.

Richard Greaves (3) was baptized 8 Oct. 1780 in Sutton Cum Lound, Nottinghamshire.  He married Sarah ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  All their children were born in Sutton Cum Lound.  (R‑1)

William Greaves (5) was baptized 25 Feb. 1784 in Sutton Cum Lound.  He married Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1787 in Topsholf, Middlesex.  They were in the 1841 census for Sutton, Nottinghamshire, with their 3 sons, when William was a farmer and son George was an agricultural labourer.  They were in the 1861 censuses for Sutton, Nottinghamshire, when he was a baker and a flour seller.  Sons Richard and Charles may be the labourers in a beer house in 1851 in Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield, Yorkshire.  (R‑1)

Abigail Greaves (6) was baptized 8 April 1787 in Sutton Cum Lound.  She married James Hanson on 28 Nov. 1817 in Mattersey, Notts.  He was born about 1783 or 1785[2] in Blyth, Notts.  They were in the 1841 and 1861 censuses for Adwick Le Street, Yorkshire.  He was an agricultural labourer in 1841 and a stone breaker on the parish road in 1861.  She was listed as blind in 1861.  (R‑1)

Richard Greaves (11) was born about 1806, and was baptized 23 Sept. 1806 in Sutton, Nottinghamshire.  He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1811 in Nottinghamshire, and died before 1851.  They were in the 1841 census for Sutton, Nottinghamshire, with all their children.  He was in the 1851 census for Radford, Nottinghamshire, 44, widower, with children Thomas, Sarah, Charles and Joseph.  His son John was living next door with his wifeÕs family.  Richard was a sawyer.  All their children were born in Sutton, Notts.  (R‑1)

John Greaves (17) was born 27 Dec. 1831 and was baptized 29 Dec. 1831, both in Sutton, Nottinghamshire.  He married Pheobia Marsden.  She was born about 1828 in Worksop, Notts.  They were in the 1851 census for Radford, Notts., living with her widowed mother.  John was a sawyer.

   22.   Mary Greaves, b. 1851 (Worksop, Notts.).

 

Thomas Greaves (18) was born in 1834 in Sutton, Nottinghamshire, was baptized 8 June 1834 in Sutton Cum Lound, Nottinghamshire, and died in 1875.  He was a sawyer.  He first married Elizabeth Coulthread on 22 Dec. 1852 in Finningley.  She died in 1856.  He married second Sophia Parnham, daughter of Charles Parnham and Mary Hattan, on 27 Nov. 1859 in Priory Church, Worksop.  She was born about 1829 in Lead Hill, Worksop, Notts., was baptized 18 March 1829, and died in 1882.  She was a charwoman.  All children by the second marriage were born in Worksop.  (R‑1)

Joseph Greaves (21) was born about 1845 in Sutton, Nottinghamshire.  He married Mary Elizabeth Hibbard on 4 Jan. 1864 in the Priory Church, Worksop, Notts.  She was born about 1844 in Worksop.  All their children were born in Worksop.  (R‑1)

Eliza Greaves (26) was born about 1856 or 1858 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.  She married John Gladwin on 1 April 1872 in the Priory Church, Worksop, Notts.  He was born about 1851 in Brimington, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.  They were in the 1891 and 1901 censuses for Worksop.  He was a coal miner.  All their children were born in Worksop, Notts.  (R‑1)

Harry Greaves (27) was born about 1861 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.  He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1857 in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.  They were in the 1901 census for Rawmarsh, Rotherham, Yorks.  He was a coal miner.  All their children were born in Park Gate, Rotherham, Yorks.  (R‑1)

John Greaves (30) was born about 1869 in Marecroft, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and was baptized 7 Feb. 1869 in the Priory Church, Worksop.  He married Margaret Louise ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1864 in Ireland.  They were in the 1901 census for Rawmarsh, Yorkshire.  He was a colliery deputy in a below-ground coal mine.  His first 3 children were born in Greasborough, Yorkshire, and the fourth in Rawmarsh, Yorks.  (R‑1)

Mary Ellen Gladwin (40), called Ellen, was born about 1873 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.  She married William Woodward about 1891.  He was born about 1871 in Leeds, Yorkshire.  In the 1891 census for Worksop, they were living with her parents.  They were in the 1901 census for Worksop, when Fred and Arthur Woodward, probably his brothers, and John Woodward, probably his father, were living with them.  He was a coal miner.  All their children were born in Worksop.

[1] From www.genuki.org: "Sutton-cum-Lound Parish. This extensive parish is divided into the two townships of Sutton and Lound, which are bounded on the west by Barnby Moor and Torworth, and on the east by the River Idle. It contains 870 inhabitants, and 4,429 acres of rich sandy land, which produces abundant crops of wheat and turnips, and is noted for its early potatos, of which large quantities are sent to Sheffield and other markets. The common land was enclosed in 1777, when 718a, 3r 26p, now called Danes Hill Farm, were allotted to the impropriator, the Duke of Portland, and 105a 22p to the vicar, in lieu of all the tithes of the parish. The Archbishop of York enjoys the manorial rights of both Sutton and Lound. The former is all copyhold (except about 2½ acres), subject to small certain fines, and the latter is mostly freehold, belonging to resident owners, of which John Walker Esq. and Henry Bagshaw Esq. are the principal. The Duke of Portland, the Rev. William Simpson, Thomas Markham, and Joseph Allison Esqs. are the principal owners of Sutton. The Archbishop had the manor of Sutton at the Domesday survey, but that of Lound was partly soc to the King's manor of Bothamsall, and partly of the fee of Roger de Busli.
Sutton stands half a mile east of the north road, and three miles north-west by north of Retford. The church, dedicated to St Bartholomew, is an ancient gothic structure, with a large chancel, a north aisle, and a handsome pinnacled tower, in which are three bells." [2] The 1841 census gave his age as 56 and hers as 55, and the 1861 census gave his age as 78 and hers as 79.
