DESCENDANTS OF GEORGE GRAVES AND SARAH BUTFOY OF BETHNAL GREEN, SOUTH HACKNEY, MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

George Graves (1) may have been born about 1800. In the 1841 census for Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England, there is a George Graves, 20, stenciler, Susan, 25, Mary, 3, and George, 5 months, but this may not be the correct family. George married Sarah, possibly Sarah Butfoy, widow of Thomas As(h)ton. She was born about 1801 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex. They were in the 1851 census for South Hackney, Middlesex, with Sarah Graves, widow, 50, and children Thomas Aston, 22, Mary A. Aston, 20, Sarah Graves, 14, and George Graves, 11. The 1861 census for South Hackney, Middlesex, listed Sarah, 60, Maria Ashton, 28, Sarah Graves, 21, and George Graves, 18, all born in Bethnal Green, Middlesex.

George Graves was a police officer. The Times on-line archive carries several contemporary references to police officers bearing tht name. It is possible that he was in the service of a railroad company. (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF GEORGE GRAVES (1) AND SARAH BUTFOY

Sarah Graves (2) was born about 1836 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex, died 4 Jan. 1914 in Duddeston, Warwickshire, and was buried 10 Jan. 1914 at St. Saviours, Saltley (North Birmingham), Warwickshire. She married Howard Clement Varrall on 26 July 1863 in South Hackney, Middlesex. He was born about 1840 in St. Luke, Middlesex, and died in 1891. He was a pewterer with James Yates & Co. They were in the 1871 census for Bethnal Green, Hackney, London, and the 1881 census for Aston, Warwickshire. In the 1881 census, the first 4 children were listed as born in Old Ford, Middlesex, and the last 2 in Birmingham, Warwickshire. The family was in the 1891 census for Aston, Warwickshire, without Howard and with Sarah listed as a widow. (R‑1)
