DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GREAVES AND JANE BOTTOMLEY OF OLDHAM, LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

John Greaves (1) may have been born about 1806, perhaps in the vicinity of Oldham, Lancashire, England. He married Jane Bottomley on 16 Aug. 1830 at St. Mary, Oldham, Lancashire. She was born 24 Dec. 1806, and died 5 March 1872 in Essex Co., Ontario, Canada. They lived at Turf Lane, Royton, Lancashire. They emigrated to New York in 1850, and then to Essex Co., Ontario in 1856. A map of the area where the family lived in Lancashire is below.

It was thought that this might be the family that was in the 1841 census for Ashton uner Lyne, Lancashire (only 4 miles south of Royton), with John Greaves, 35, merchant, Jane, 35, and children Eliza, 11, Ann, 8, and Maria, 3. However, that family was still at the same location in 1851, and did not have the right children. (R‑1, R‑3)

Joseph Greaves (5) was born in March 1836 in Lancashire, England. He married Alvira Totten about 1875. She was born in Feb. 1856 in IN. They were in the 1900 census for Radersburg, Broadwater Co., MT. He was a farmer. Their first 7 children were born in Ontario, Canada, and the eighth in MT.

John Greaves (8) was born 29 June 18443 in England, and died 7 March 1908 in Essex, Ontario, Canada. He married Helen Louisa (or Louise) Collins, daughter of Charles Collins and Elizabeth Richards. She was born 28 Feb. 1851 in Maidstone Twp., Essex Co., and died 17 April 1908 in Essex, both in Ontario, Canada. They were both buried in North Ridge Cem., North Ridge, Ontario, Canada.

SUDDEN CALL, JOHN GREAVES OF ESSEX DIES OF PARALYTIC STROKE

Essex, March 7. The citizens of Essex were somewhat alarmed this morning when the news was circulated that John Greaves of this town died very suddenly at 10 o’clock today.

Deceased was in the best of health and this morning was doing his usual chores. After concluding these he came into the house and without a moment’s warning dropped to the floor. A doctor was called in immediately and it was found tht he had a paralytic stroke. Everything that would be of any use was administered but death came in about one hour. About a year ago the deceased had a slight stroke but of late has been in the best of health.

It was remarked this morning he was more than usually bright owing to the health of his wife being somewhat improved. Mrs. Greaves has been in poor health for some time.

Deceased was 65 years of age next June and leaves a large family. He was formerly a farmer in Maidstone but of late years has resided in Essex. (R‑4)

Jane Greaves (9), or Jane Elizabeth Greaves, was born 14 April 1847 in Lancashire, England, died 24 March 1913 in Essex, Ontario, and was buried in North Ridge Cem., just east of Essex, Ontario, Canada. She married William Daniel Bennett, son of Joseph Bennett and Elizabeth Collins, in 1866 in Maidstone Cross, Ontario. He was born 27 July 1843 in Maidstone Cross, and died 17 Jan. 1907 in Essex, both in Ontario, Canada. Their first 4 children were born in Adrian, Lenawee Co., MI, the next child was born in Woodslee, Ontario, and the last in South Woodslee, Ontario. (R‑2)

Carebaugh, on 10 April 1917 in Lenawee Co., MI. She was born 16 April 1897 in Fairfield Twp., Lenawee Co., MI, and died 13 Dec. 1984 in Warren, Macomb Co., MI.
