DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMINE GRAVES AND JUDY GRAVES OF BRUNSWICK CO., VA

GENERATION 1

Benjamin Graves (1) was born about 1775 in VA. He may have married Judy Graves. She was born about 1775 or 1780 in VA, possibly in St. Peter’s, VA. She is said to have been emancipated from slavery by Richard Graves. It is thought that the slaveowner who freed her may have been either Richard Groshaw Graves or his son Richard Graves of New Kent Co., VA (genealogy 169). St. Peter’s may have been St. Peter’s Church (an Episcopal church built in 1703) in New Kent Co., VA. Many of the family members were found in Brunswick Co., VA in 1850 and after, about 60 miles south of Richmond and New Kent Co., VA. She was living with her son Joseph in 1850 in Brunswick Co., VA. In the 1840 census for Brunswick Co., VA, Benj. Graves was listed as a free colored person with 2 males under 10, 3 males 10-24, and 1 male 24-36 (prob. Joseph), 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-24 (maybe Eliza and Ginthia), and 1 female 24-36 (prob. Milly), (where was Judy?). The 1830 census did not list free colored persons. Almost certainly, the birth date of either son Joseph or Henry is wrong, since it is unlikely they were born 5 months apart.

Missouri was in the 1900 census for Sturgeon, Brunswick Co., VA, married 33 years, 6 of her 14 children still living, but Benjamin was not in the household. The 1910 census for Sturgeon, Brunswick Co., VA, lists Missouri, widowed, with 5 of her 12 children still living.
