DESCENDANTS OF EDWARD GRAVES AND SUSAN ------ OF SOUTH ORMSBY & ABY, LINCOLNSHIRE, ENGLAND

OVERVIEW

It is suspected that most of the Graves families of Lincolnshire are descended from a common Graves ancestor. One of the objectives of the Graves Family Association and the Graves DNA project at Family Tree DNA is to try to connect all of the various parts of this family in Lincolnshire.

In looking at genealogies posted at Ancestry.com, it is apparent that not everyone agrees on the correct ancestry for some of the parts of the family. Source R‑2 is one such example, where William Graves who married Elizabeth Campling is shown as a son of Thomas Dawson Graves and Elizabeth Howden. However, the William Graves who was a son of Thomas Dawson Graves is shown in genealogy 967 to have married Charlotte Cottingham and have entirely different children. Which one is correct?

It can be seen in this genealogy that William Graves who married Elizabeth Campling is shown as a son of Edward Graves and Ann Carter as given by source R‑1.

GENERATION 1

Edward Graves (1) was born about 1795 in South Ormsby, Lincolnshire. He married Susan ‑‑‑‑‑‑ in 1815 in Aby, Lincolnshire. All their children were born in Aby, Lincs. (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF EDWARD GRAVES (1) AND SUSAN ------

Edward Graves (4) was born about 1819 in Aby, and died in March 1858, both in Lincolnshire. He married Ann Carter in Dec. 1843 quarter (vol. 14, p. 953) in Spilsby, Lincolnshire. She was born about 1828 in Hundleby, Lincs. There was also an Ann Cowley that married an Edward Graves in Louth in the Sept. 1842 quarter, but that is less likely to be the correct marriage, since Spilsby and Hundleby are next to each other, and Louth is farther away. Also, a grandson was named Carter Graves. (R‑1)

William Graves (8) was born in Jan. 1849 in Swaby, Lincolnshire, and died in Dec. 1920 in Louth, Lincs. He married Elizabeth Campling, daughter of George Campling and Ann Kirkby, on 16 March 1876 in Swaby, Lincs. She was born 19 Feb. 1856 in Swaby, Lincoln, and died 12 May 1933 in the City of Lincoln, Lincs.. All their children were born in Lincolnshire. (R‑1, R‑2)

Arthur Graves (14) was born about 1876 in Lincolnshire, and died 4 Feb. 1966 in Sudbrooks, Lincs. He married Sarah Elizabeth Clarke, daughter of William Clarke and Lucy Ann Cowley, in 1903. She was born about 1885 in Burgh le Marsh, Lincs., and died 3 Nov. 1963. At least their first 3 children were born in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. (R‑1)

Gerald Graves (43) was born 6 March 1911 in Bracebridge, Lincolnshire, and died 23 July 1941 in Haifa, Palestine. He was in the Yorkshire Dragoons during World War II. He married Vera Nellie Alexandria Smith, daughter of George Smith and Nellie (“Ellen”) Keightley, in Oct. 1936 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. After Gerald died, she married Ronald Hack Dec. 1951 in Melton Mowbray. She was born 24 June 1914 and died in Sept. 2000, both in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. (R‑2)
